1·2 hours agoIt’s okay! We still have most of the uranium and our reactors make plutonium as a by-product. We don’t need to stock nuclear cakes when the pantry is overflowing and the oven is pre-heated.
Thanks. I butchered a line from this poem: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44131/a-valediction-forbidding-mourning

Independent Media@lemmy.today•Russian neurotechnology company says it can steer pigeon flocks with implanted brain chipsEnglish
1·2 days agoPart of it is: I’m a nerd for ethical violations in science and medicine. The other part was like, damn, why you talking down to this person like they don’t know about Russian scientists?
The third part was: “Evil doesn’t have borders.” One guy doesn’t really represent a whole country when we have crazy guys all over the place.
Russia isn’t even the first to try remote control animals, so it’s not that crazy by modern science standards. Nano-Mind in Korea and DARPA in the USA are into it, to name two. There were those mind-controlled CIA dogs, too.

2·2 days agoApologies for the wikipedia style response. This is how I am.
Demnikov died almost thirty years ago. This is from last week in Canada. Our regulatory bodies have no teeth and legislation is slow to catch up with public sentiment when it comes to animal welfare.
Even then, the companies who can afford it will just go where it’s cheaper and easier to experiment on people, animals, or whatever. Evil doesn’t have borders.
More medical ethics horrors from around the world, just for fun:
Shitshow asylum featuring Dr. Fear, who tortures patients.
General Shira Ishii practices germ warfare on Chinese prisoners, everyone pretends it didn’t happen.

Independent Media@lemmy.today•Wild Pigs Turned 'Neon Blue' in California, Triggering WarningsEnglish
3·2 days agoFun abridged history: Neon colours are named for the lamps because neon was the first gas used in them. The OG glass tubes filled with the gas became the brand name and a lot of the other colours still use Neon, just with different coatings on the glass. Cooler colours use Argon. Neon colours are also called fluorescents, a term named for fluorite, which is a completely different mineral that glows under UV light. Neon pigments contain neither neon gas or fluorite.

Damn. I love this. You have a knack for composition and (maybe unintentionally) making quiet, ominous, terrorscapes. I’m going to see that distant black mountain slowly approach in my nightmares. Thank you.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I'm new to lemmy, came from reddit. What's the lemmy etiquette like? How different is it from reddiqutte?English
12·3 days agoI didn’t use reddit much outside of a few niche communities, it had a repetitive brand of humor and weird dogpiling I didn’t jive with. Here, I find people genuinely want to engage, with moderation suited to a more mature crowd, at least in the communities I hang around.
There are culture shifts between instances and communities, so I try to have a look around before I speak up. Some places you gotta lurk to get a feel, others are a free for all. I stepped on a few toes while I got my footing — just read the sidebars if you want to avoid that.
Browsing by subscribed is the best experience, in my opinion. I see every instance so ALL is a cacophony of back alley circus heretics if I don’t tailor my feed.
Here are some useful tools I picked up in my time here:
Check defederated instances: https://federation-checker.vercel.app/
Fediverse Observer: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list

72·4 days agoWait, THIS is what people are talking about when they say the devs are transphobic?
The dev admitting he said stupid shit in private, supports human rights for everyone, and his personal views should have nothing to do with his work?
Consider the first rule of the Lemmy code of Conduct is:
We are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of level of experience, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other similar characteristic.
