Is America great again yet?
Agree to disagree then. I don’t think being so reductive as to decide who someone is in their totality off of a single sentence is a generally good behavior. Then again you’re free to do whatever you want and think whatever you want.
Sometimes there’s no time for actions as in when you’re first meeting someone or even a group of people. For sure my views or mindset have been under scrutiny from the get go in my life. If you want to say my actual lived experience is an argument in bad faith you’re free to but I politely disagree such circumstances are purely contrived.
Of course actions speak louder than words but that is a bit outside the hypothetical given.
Both are bad? I guess it depends how utilitarian you are.
One would think. One must remember that racism at least on an interpersonal level isn’t one direction. In group theory systemic racism is typically from the dominant group towards the non-dominant group. In interpersonal racism anyone can be racist towards anyone anytime. All it takes is making positive or negative assumptions about someone based on their race. The situations I’ve found myself in is where someone was assuming something about me without knowing me just based on my race.
Yeah there’s that discussion as well. It’s easy to get lumped into a group one doesn’t self identify with or whose behaviors don’t agree with if one happens to use similar verbage. I would hold reservations to see if someone is actually in a group instead of just assuming off of a single sentence, but that’s just me personally.
Separating the societal circumstance from the individual circumstance seems really important for this discussion but ideally the same person who is uncomfortable with systemic racism is equally uncomfortable with interpersonal racism.
I’m having a difficult time parsing this sentence. Could you expand on it further please.
I think I tend to take more of an interpersonal approach than a group approach towards life. Group theory is a perception of society but it isn’t the only one. Generally speaking i want equitable treatment for all people regardless of the groups they happen to belong to. That’s to say I’m more individual focused than group focused. Just because someone is in a group doesn’t mean they specifically have faced any hardships in relationships to that group. In many and arguably in any country the determining factor is wealth and the power of one’s social networks. Like an individual in Kenya can most definitely avoid any issues whatsoever with their race if they are wealthy and powerful enough. I couldn’t say just because they are Somalian that they suffered the same prejudice that a poor Somalian in Kenya has. Group theory though does have a place when one is talking about statistics aka large amounts of people who share a group more so than an individual. Both perception are right and neither is wrong for the other being right.
