Sure. There’s various ways to influence the gene pool and most are not great ideas on a large scale. Enforced non-procreation for people with “undesirable” genes is a dark road to go down. Especially if we have other ways to treat these problems.

In the very long term the lack of natural selection could have a noticeable degrading effect on the human genome, but it’s a slow process of drift. Since gene editing will probably be more common eventually I don’t see it as a major concern. We left the brutal mechanisms of nature behind, and we already have the means to replace them. It’s right that we approach the topic of genetic manipulation with caution, focusing on clear cases of extreme need. We’re fine for the foreseeable future.

Natural selection was always the cruelest way to manage disease. It requires us to be struggling to survive. When a significant proportion of humankind have died from a disease, we may evolve a resistence to it, but that’s a brutal price to pay. We’re past that, and good riddance to it.

But you chose a strange place to bring that up. A drug to prevent Alzheimers won’t have much effect on natural selection, since a susceptibility to Alzheimers would very rarely prevent successful reproduction. Alzheimers is strongly tied to the ageing process, which is probably an evolved characteristic in itself. Natural selection was never a friend to the elderly.

What nonsense. What matters isn’t whether we use physical disks or not. And it’s all digital anyway, you don’t get many games on vinyl these days. The real issue is whether you own the games you buy. As GOG is proving, game ownership is something that publishers can easily offer, regardless of the delivery mechanism. If Sony would step up and do the same, killing physical discs wouldn’t be a problem. It’s a trust issue.

There may be many cases where AI has been a benefit to vulnerable people. LLMs aren’t going away any time soon so it’s good if they tell you not to kill yourself. But that should be the end of it. The more we lean on AI to fix societal problems, the deeper the problems will get. Relying on an LLM to be a substitute for human interaction is a really bad idea. It’s easy, it’s compelling, and it will help you to put yourself in a much deeper hole than you were in before.

If you are banning things people see as needs, that’s not governance. That’s cruelty.

How about fentanyl, or meth? Many people see them as a need, once they get started. Much like an AI companion, they offer a quick fix to make you feel better and get away from the difficulties you’re facing in the real world. What has happened to the US is the direct result of unfettered capitalism. The more the wealth gets concentrated into the hands of fewer and fewer people, the more the ultra wealthy need to invest in oppression, surveillance, disinformation and fascism, since a united and well informed public would put their heads on spikes. Other countries are a little better insulated, not having bought so wholeheartedly into the idea of money controlling politics and not having been similarly brainwashed. The USA has been primed to fall first. But the root cause is ludicrous wealth inequality, which is a feature of capitalism and very much a global issue.
