  • Good stuff. I think there’s an some personal sites that are web devs trying neat things and that leads to larger sites like visualrambling.space and such, but most people’s personal sites aren’t doing anything crazy and following these rules will help (see also the smolweb movement). But worst of all are people on substack, which will load 12 MB of javascript on any random text+static pics page.

  • There was a big push a few years ago to come up with an alternative to “vegan” to put on packaging, and they came up with “Plant-based” as the euphemism of choice. I don’t recall what the major driver was, it was either from vegans who say veganism entails more than just “don’t put animal products directly into the product” or if it was manufacturers who thought the word “vegan” would scare away normies after decades of bad mouthing.

I saw it coming immediately that plant-based doesn’t mean “vegan but they didn’t bother certifying” but rather that it means “has some part that is mostly plants”, see the Jimmy Dean plant based patty sandwiches.

If it ain’t got that (V) you gotta start deciphering the ingredients list cause those Fulkerson will put in anything

  • No that makes a ton of sense. I do definitely worry that you’re taking on too many complex adjacent things at once then. I myself use docker containers inside WSL to do dev work with Git and all these various things on a daily basis, but it took me a few years to feel comfortable like this. I think I would suggest you focus on the coding (python, javascript, etc etc) first and if it’s something that you can do in windows using just vscode, thats going to have less friction than trying to learn git at the same time as trying to learn command-line Linux. And once you feel comfortable with vscoding in windows, swap over to vscode in wsl, that way the IDE (vscode) is still familiar, but now you’re layering on the next level. And honestly, Git is pretty low on the stuff to learn. I know entire companies that do software version ingredients and sharing via email (aka, when Bob updates code he and Alice both use, he just emails her a copy) crazy, but it works for them.

On the other hand, this Odin project looks pretty well set up so that maybe after a couple weeks of feeling terrible, you pop out on the other side where it took me years to get to!

  • What? I think we’re saying the same thing. I’m saying it’s anti immigrant bullshit, with a focus on asylum seekers first (specifically called out to end asylum and family reunification first), that certainly come from non-white (non-european?) countries primarily, even though cutting asylum approvals to 0 10 years ago wouldnt stop them hitting 10 million by 2050. Its just a happy goal they get to accomplish on the way to trying to stop free movement.

But it would be more fun if it was a relegation system where anyone can lose. I want someone to be able to challenge me and we trade citizenship if I lose

  • If you’re looking to quit, consider swapping to a refillable vape, then you can slowly reduce the nicotine level in the juice until you’re vaping 0% nic. Do it pretty slowly though, and try to go for a vape like this that’s refillable, coil replaceable, and not some monstrosity larger than your phone. Try to resist the urge to join ‘vape culture’ since that will have you wanting to stick around.

If you’re not looking to quit, I think new pouches are just as bad (healthwise) as the old ones. Less gross looking/tasting, but you’re probably already desensitized to that part, lol.

A brand like this one let’s you slowly lower the nicotine without changing anything else, so once you find a flavor you like you don’t have to worry about ‘losing’ it if you change strength
