My dad saw the first 3 movies as they released to theatres originally and says they didn’t even have the episode 4-6 labeling until they re-released the movies in the 80s.
Which is even more confusing, I think.

The character Poe Dameron knows nothing about Force magic, which is why he says “somehow.” He is working from limited information and is not an “author voice” to the audience.
To be fair, the comic they lifted the idea from showed it in greater detail.
