My grandma was a sign and letter painter back in the day. She made a good living doing it up until about the 80s or 90s. It’s one of those professions that just sort of faded into nonexistence.
It was replaced by computers and wide format printers. Some of the larger shops retooled and no longer needed dozens of sign painters, since a computer/printer could be operated by one person, while shops that couldn’t afford the new tech eventually closed.
Who designed these? That is some A level font design. It looks so time appropriate. The styling is suspiciously good looking.
Edit: PugJesus always has the best posts.
They’re a riff on the Art Deco fonts of the 1930s.
