In my interpretation, the post title is a quote that captures Zizek’s(or Lacan’s) idea that we don’t simply have some inner authentic desires that we then express. Our desires are always already mediated through our relationship with authority figures, culture, and social expectations. The coach’s reaction reinforces this dynamic. The girl’s excellence feeds the coach’s desire, which feeds the girl’s desire to continue excelling.

For Žižek, our wants are always filtered through what we see others valuing. We catch desire like a contagion. Even when you think you’re choosing something freely, you’re often just echoing what the people around you (or society at large) have already decided is worth wanting. In this way, desire should be recognized as something social that travels between people. The Other (other people, society, culture) is always already built into what we think we want.

I do concur tho, I got mad chillz toward the end lol
