So if we say who is included (lesbians gays bisexuals and trans people) everyone not one of those things is excluded, only by keeping close to those things can you be included even if you’re otherwise queer.
The logic of exclusion persists in cultural and institutional memory as well as being personally a piece of shit, as we see with modern groups dropping the T from lgbt, or the ‘acronym too long’ types who aren’t concerned so much with the acronym itself

Queer was the same slur as the rest for me growing up. I can see myself being judged for using it. I would gladly use gender minorities if I need an alternative.
Also the people outside the community like me, right? Or would that be kind of like the N word, only for people inside the community? I want to use what people inside the community feel comfortable with.
I’m from Germany, so take my input with a grain of salt regarding English. But here queer is indeed just the common word both by queer people and everyone else. Some conservatives don’t like it because it’s a new age word and prefer gay/lesbian, which is also fine by me.
I think in English its more common that older queer people don’t like it, because they remember it as a slur, while younger are more open. Though a lesbian friend of mine was surprised when she heard about the usage in Germany, because while she doesnt see it as a slur, she associates it with flamboyancy and doesnt consider herself so.
I think it should be a word for everyone, because it goes of the tongue better. But maybe feel the crowd first and go by what they use.
I also like it for its meaning, especially that it encompasses more than just gay and lesbian, since there are so many other non-conforming ways of being. Although the sound of the word is a little bit slur-ish to me. It sounds to me like something “wrong” or not as it “should be”. I imagine that’s due to one or several of:
it has a harsh sound
my bias/prejudice
it sounds kind of like the “square” in “be there or be square”, to me 😅
just overall connotation maybe
But either way, if that’s what goes, I’m more than happy to oblige. I want to be a cis straight male that sets an example for others of my kind — one of respect and friendship, regardless of who you are. In honor of my grandfather, RIP.
Yeah the Queer part seems to be the umbrella term, which includes both people who are not included in the other letters, but also those which are included. So that kind of makes LGBTQ a recursive initialism, and the + also seems redundant, as well as the LGBT part when you think about it. 😅️
But anyway, I think queer is a great word for it. It’s almost “queen”, just with the thing cut off at the end there.
