and frankly e-reader users should ditch Kindle. They’re engineered to fail these days and vendor lock in with the most evil of the e-book retailers is… less than great I would say

I’m not fan of how they treat ebooks these days. But they are solid devices as long as you sideload them. Since they are so common, they are much easier to repair, hack, etc. So I think Kindles are really good tech.

But I’ve never bought an ebook from Amazon, and never will. And I have had many, many Kindles over the years. There are lots of Kindle alternatives out there. But there are also lots of inexpensive used Kindles out there that work great too.

I’ve never owned a Kindle but I’ve also heard people say they have far-and-away the best battery life among e-readers.

I only need to charge my kobo every 3 weeks or so, but less often if I keep my backlight to a minimum.

The battery could only last 3 days and I’d still rather have one of these than a Kindle.

What is your recommendation for sideloading one? I have a Paperwhite from probably 2019-2021 that I want to start using again. The constant “you need to sign in” pop up is frustrating as all hell.

I have loaded custom firmware way back in the past, so I am at least a bit familiar with some of the processes.
