Cool. I’m surprised it’s not another grocery outlet since that seems to be the only grocery store that gets approved under the guise of helping poor people afford food.
But maybe they are loosing the formula retail rules for market street since they want to show high occupancy/SF rebounding
Sprouts is just Whole Foods with better lighting: I’m not shopping there unless I’m feeling rich or desperate.
But to be fair, Sprouts quality is pretty good.
I do like Groce Out and I do like that they’re locally based in Emeryville, but it is nice to see something different.
The folks in the Fillmore are complaining about losing their Safeway, but they haven’t discovered Nijiya Supermarket in Japantown on the other side of Geary. They’re not cheap, but neither is Safeway these days.
I always shop at grocery outlet first then go to other grocery stores for anything on my list that they didn’t have. I talked to the man that delivered bread to grocery outlet and he said it’s the exact same bread loaves that he delivers to Safeway for better prices.
I’ve sadly stopped shopping at the farmer’s market as often as I use to. But 3 baskets of strawberries are $16 that taste no better than grocery outlet strawberries at 2 lbs for $5.
My friend likes sprouts for certain things. I didn’t really see the appeal. I’m happy for whoever this benefits but it might take me awhile to walk in that store. Mostly because it’s not my neighborhood.
I don’t believe Lurie would permit a Walmart to open in SF (not that they’d want to) but I suspect he is open to most formula retail opening in SF to fill buildings and claim victories.
I do just about the same! I hit Asian and Latino groceries mostly for fresh veg and fruit, then Groce Out before hitting Safeway for anything I can’t get at the other two.
Farmers markets just aren’t convenient for me so I haven’t been to one in years.
One thing I do like about Sprouts is their bargain section in the back. The Sprouts house branded coffee is pretty good, and their produce looks good, but overall their prices are far too high. Then again, I’ve never seen a Mollie Stones go out of business.
I’ve actually come to appreciate Walmart when they carry something specific that I’m looking for, and their bargain section is always… interesting. I wouldn’t want to spend a whole day wandering the aisles though.
