15 years, reddit gold charter member, Secret Santa, all that stuff. And longer than 15 really, if you count the browsing I did before I made my account (I remember before subreddits were even a thing, when reddit was literally just a front page).

Are you me? This is exactly where I’m at. 15+ years with the same trophy list as you. I still use desktop for a couple of communities but my mobile use died with RiF (Golden Platinum).

I took a few minutes and looked into this. Centrica owns more and does more than just British Gas Energy and looking at their website it appears that BGE is actually a pretty minor part of their profit picture as it represents only 98M GBP of the 3.3 Billion GBP reported by Centrica (and audited as such) in 2022.

If you download their 2022 Financial Statement (PDF Warning) it appears that by revenue BGE is smaller than Centrica’s Energy Market & Trading and by profit it is vastly smaller. If you jump to “4 . Segmental analysis © Adjusted gross margin and adjusted operating profit” you find that in 2022 BGE had an operating profit of only 72 Million GBP while EM&T and Upstream had 1,400 Million and 1,793 Million respectively.

The overwhelming majority of their profit isn’t coming via BGE charging consumers!

So the article headline is wrong. British Gas (Energy) did not have a 969 Million GBP profit, the Centrica group did and based on historical performance it’s quite likely that BGE only contributed 10% or so to that number.

This doesn’t mean that folks in the UK aren’t being overcharged or that something shouldn’t be done with your tax structure but this article leaves out critical detail that leaves the reader with false assumptions.

You are going to have to decide how much risk to yourself and your family you are willing to accept. If you really want to do this then stop contacting the local authorities and go up the chain. In the United States I’d walk into an FBI office with a full copy, not the originals, of your files along with a typed up description of every detail including what happened when your FiL and yourself tried calling it in to the local authorities.

In the UK it would seem to be the National Crime Agency as they are the ones that handle Organized Crime however they say that they don’t take reports from members of the Public. If you don’t want to do that or nothing happens when you do then I’d suggest going to a Solictor and discussing the matter with them.

Edit: It’s very strange that the UK’s national law enforcement doesn’t have an official Government engagement point with the public. In the US you can directly contact nearly all of the Federal Law Enforcement agencies including the FBI, Secret Service, US Marshalls, DEA, BATFE, ICE and many more. Hell even the CIA will take phone calls from the regular public!

Native population growth is ALREADY curbed in nearly all Indusrialized Nations and places like the US are only growing due to immigration.

The global population keeps climbing because of under and still developing countries…and even in those places their rate of growth is slowing.

Globally the population will hit max around the year 2100 but many rich nations already heat peak population and are now declining.

Why would they face any legal consequences any more than any other social media?

Instance location. Content comes at you from all over the Fediverse but once its in your instance it’s actually located on your server. It’s obvious how even regular NSFW stuff can be a problem if your instance is sitting in a ME country but perhaps less obvious (and more troublesome) is text based content.

For instance if a user is enrolled on an instance located in Germany and then subscribes to Neo-Nazi content from an instance located in the United States. That NN material is now on your instance but much of it is probably illegal in Germany. What happens when the German Authorities find out and come knocking?

Even “Child Porn” isn’t nearly as cut and dried as most people think. Things like /c/tinytitties or /c/flatchested from lemmynsfw are arguably illegal in a place like Australia since the person can be perceived as under-age due to their physical characteristics. It gets worse when you toss in the AI Generated stuff.

Big Tech does a lot of juggling trying to stay clear of these problems and they have large legal teams to help them when they run into trouble. I rather doubt that most instance admins have the resources for it.

Ad Revenue. Someone paying for Reddit Premium gets an ad free experience which is fine but someone who gets gifted Gold also gets an ad free experience. They need as many people as possible to see ads so free loaders have to go…which means so do the coins.

I fully expect that within a year Reddit will start doing what many streaming services are where the lowest tier is free but ad supported, then there’s a paid “limited ad” tier, followed by an even more expensive “No Ads” tier. The current Reddit Premium program will transition to that mid-tier category and they’ll add “Reddit Ultimate” or some BS as the new Ad Free option. It’ll probably cost $10 a month too.

Turtle was active on Reddit about 16 HOURS a day so it was certainly possible. Of course they didn’t actually do much of anything in those subs, they just collected them.
