After checking out more options, I think forgejo looks like a good place to start.

Thanks, yes, I’d far rather stick with a familiar and ubiquitous system unless I see a reason to switch. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll keep it in mind.
After looking at that list, I think forgejo or gitea are what I’m looking for. I would prefer to stick with software as open as possible, so forgejo looks like where I’ll start. I love that they’re involved in federation and have a collective governance structure.
Oh, yeah, I meant open-core, not closed-core, but I’m still leery of software where they close off portions to make you want to pay. It gives them an incentive to make the open part of it worse.
It’s so obviously true but libs can’t accept it so they just come with the downvotes.
Yup, people who argue that Biden shouldn’t be criticised for his genocide because “Trump is worse” are just doing genocide denial.
Even if you take the stance that he has to beat Trump to prevent an even worse climate disaster, his genocide might stop him beating Trump. He is choosing genocide and supporting fascism overseas rather than beating fascism at home.
People go on about how much we need to beat Trump but I’m pretty convinced that Biden and the DNC don’t really want to beat Trump.
That’s also why threatening to not vote Biden is useless - he won’t care. Vote for him and force him to spend another 4 years disappointing and radicalising his own base against the US empire.
Okay, maybe it won’t be my first port of call then.
Okay, thanks for the heads up.
A quick search found this: https://trac-hacks.org/wiki/TracKanbanBoardMacro
Looks like there are others too, I’ll play around and see what works for me.
Okay, I wasn’t able to review your links before so I just focussed on answering your question.
Trac looks the most promising of everything I’ve seen so far, I like that it’s minimal and also does basically everything I’m looking for in one place. I’ll give it a try first.
Thanks so much!
Okay, I’m looking into that, thanks. The open-core model is a little concerning for me - one of the things I hate about the proprietary stuff is all the gatekeeping you have to deal with, but if the other possibilities don’t pan out I’ll consider it.
Oh good question. I’m using it for personal software development, tracking new features, bugs and documenting my research.
I mostly use the kanban board view. I’ve wanted to add Confluence documentation pages but didn’t want to pay.
I’ll also be developing hardware soon.
Yup, no worries, i just appreciate the way he does things and wanted to share the info :)
Just fyi, Randall who makes xkcd has a very permissive approach and offers hotlinks on the site for easy embedding. I think he prefers that you hotlink rather than reupload.
They’re also saying they support activism so little that they needed chatgpt to come up with an answer for them. Almost like they don’t support any progressive movements, they don’t care about the effectiveness of the methods and they’re just here to attack climate protestors.
I keep seeing people talk about Rust, and to be honest I never thought much about it because I’ve never had a reason to use it.
But when so many people in a programmer meme sub are saying “actually no joke Rust is amazing” that makes me pay attention.
So I looked into it and found this: https://github.blog/2023-08-30-why-rust-is-the-most-admired-language-among-developers/
Uh… those are exactly my politics. I think this is just a misunderstanding about a few word definitions. EDIT: Actually, based on your talk of “candidates”, maybe we don’t have the same politics. I don’t know, read what I have to say and judge for yourself.
I just happen to consider building prefigurative movements to be “breaking the system” and “revolution”. They just aren’t necessarily one big moment of rupture. Meeting people’s needs, doing mutual aid, community self defence etc, is weaning them off of dependence on capital and the state, and it is a revolution in the sense that it is a transfer of power away from the dominant system, even if it is slow, even if it is only about giving people food at first.
A sledgehammer breaks the pavement, but so does a root.
We can expect that when we do these projects, if they become successful enough, they will threaten to displace the enemy system entirely, and that will involve a violent reaction. That may entail a moment of rupture, but that’s one step in the middle of it all. Whether something better comes out of it depends on whether the things we’ve built beforehand are strong enough to survive that moment. But don’t kid yourself, we can’t avoid violence entirely, even if it’s only defensive.
Now, the EZLN and Rojava and a bunch of other projects had their moment of rupture, and they were liberatory. Not perfect, certainly, but they are doing incredible things and they don’t have centralised leadership. The way you talk about them being “small cities” when they are large contiguous regions makes you sound ignorant of existing projects and demanding to see something “bigger than 10 million” makes you sound dismissive, like you’re a liberal defending capitalism.
I’m glad you’re not, I’m glad you’re on board with prefiguration, but it is as destructive to the enemy system as it is constructive of the new. When you build the new in the shell of the old, the shell breaks.
I remember seeing a lot about activeX controls as a kid but not understanding them much. As an adult reading this I was like “were they a way to run arbitrary code on a user’s computer?”
Yes, they were a way to run arbitrary code on a user’s computer.
Yay I can go to heaven now 🥰🥰😇😇🙏🙏
Also if you want some interesting soundscapes, I can recommend exploring mynoise.net. They have a huge variety of natural and artificial soundscapes, including a bunch of musical ones that are all tuned to be compatible with one another, so you can mix & match them. They also have a phone app, but you can only use one sound at a time with it. Also not everything is available if you don’t make a donation. I gave them 5 bucks a couple of years ago and it’s one of the best 5 bucks I’ve ever spent. It wasn’t hard to then spend a few more dollars on the app.
I use them for focus when I’m working, but lately I’ve also used them for sleeping. It works really well for me.
