Nope. Because I know I’m going to be a complete purge and I know that no one has uploaded any media, I just nuked the folders after being reasonably certain nothing bad would happen. I think that I’m going to end up writing a periodic proper purge script that is going to directly talk to pict-rs and will be awful for me to do because I know fuck all about docker, so some experimentation will be necessary.
Media absolutely gets federated. My pictrs folder is 10GB. Another 10GB is the activity table, so I tip my hat to you for finding that. I still have a very significant amount of worthless data on my disk though
That’s a good point. I’ve just been assuming that the media is the issue, but perhaps it’s just the pure database 🤔 Does doing a truncate purge the media? If not, wouldn’t I just be orphaning all these pictures, etc that have been downloaded? Also what about the fallout of your own users? I don’t really want to drop the content that was created on the instance itself
Education probably. Back in the day people didn’t have any problem understanding that different forums had different capabilities. When MMOs were in full swing, people didn’t have problems understanding what being on thr popular server during peak hours meant.
Everyone has just gotten too used to centralization with a lot of money behind it. Eventually people will adjust their expectations. Even if Meta’s fediverse attempt takes off, there are always going to be niche communities that exist outside of those spheres, so if people want that, they’ll have to move.
The point of the fediverse is having a choice. Some people are going to chose megacorp of the week’s offering and that’s okay as long a little pockets exist for when people get mad at the megacorp. Also federation leaves space for multiple dominant platforms in a way the current system doesn’t.
In short, eventually some instances are going to be bankrolled either through a robust crowdcourcing effort or through being a company. That’s okay. The purpose of the fediverse is to allow for smaller niche ideas to be able to breathe without having to adhere to one group’s ideals. “If you don’t like it, make your own” is a fair statement now
I’m old enough to remember dogpile. I learned about Google from an AOL manual. I so remember that I learned about it in middle school and it wasn’t commonly used until a few years later. And not dominant until I was well into college. People hated it I remember. I was the weirdo who fell in love immediately.
That’s my point. It’s not about if people will switch from Google. It’s about if news companies can stand the revenue loss for as long as that takes and it’ll take 2 years being extremely absurdly optimistic. Likely it’ll be 5 or more.
I’ll believe progress when anyone in my family even knows these things are an option. I’m a tech person and a fairly early adopter of tech things and I just learned whoogle was a thing this week and I don’t know anything about it besides it is a search engine.
Self hosted is great and all, but user testing my lemmy instance with non-technical and basically online people has been painful. I don’t doubt that eventually people like my sister will get to these options, but will they so it before these new organizations run out of money? That is the part I don’t think is likely. We are like 5 years ouylt before the masses get what federation is and see the light of self-hosting. Not many organizations have that kind of savings.
Sure, but the question is do the masses know about it? It’s all great to have principles until you have to consider how you’re gonna make payroll. We’ll see if I’m wrong, but I’m not sure that the world has moved away from Google domination yet.
I’m not sure what they expected. An EU country (I can’t remember if it was Spain or Italy) tried this and Google just left. Then the news outlets begged for the law to be repealed. Google has a monopoly on search. If people can’t find you there, you’re gonna have a bad time because of your traffic free fall.

Lemmy doesn’t let you block whole instances as a non-admin user. Your only recourse is to block each community. I ended up using a script that queried all the communities on on the instance I disliked and just blocked them. It really sucks, but that’s our only recourse right now.
