That’s true, but even in Shire Gandalf wouldn’t even touch the ring. When he merely reached for it he got Sauron PTSD flashbacks and he physically stepped away in fear when Frodo tried to give the ring to him later. He uses Frodo to test whether it’s cool after being heated in fire and I imagine this is for the same reason, not because he considers Frodo a good guinea pig for experimenting with metal heat dissipation.

I wish i could host my own simple lightweight identity provider and authenticator that is used for fediverse instead of creating accounts everywhere. Relying on fediverse to maintain both content, but also account info, seems like a really bad idea in retrospect (even if one day we get proper ways to migrate accounts but not even Mastodon does that well yet).
It’s probably be relatively easy to establish services offering these for less tech savvy people later so they can just have a central identity service with which they can roam around in any fediverse they want later.

Do people actually self host mail? I remember watching some conference that said it is basically a full time job nowadays to get your mails actually delivered if you’re not one of the big providers. Much easier to pay one of them and just use a custom domain instead, and I can easily see this being a thing for the fediverse one day too (assuming it ever gets big enough)
And yet they still want them, so there must be more to the story. I also don’t understand why since I have dynamic IP address in EU, unless they can match the ownership to a person at any given time in the past its not useful info.

It’s a Dell laptop with an Nvidia GPU. I tried Linux Mint but I’m having constant OS-breaking freezes after gaming for a while and it’s happening on 2 different games so far (completely unresponsive, and it’s with steam games so no custom tinkering in lutris/wine). Thinking I’ll just try a fresh install but with PopOS when I have time.

That’s what I tried first but also had a lot of confusing experiences with its file hierarchy, prefixes, lutris/wine/proton and all of these. I was hoping bottles lives up to its promise of “one click installation with community install scripts” instead. This is my first real attempt at linux, I didn’t even know what flatpak is until a week ago, I used the appimage for heroic which was also very confusing for a time. Starting to think I might be just too dumb/inpatient for it tbh, it’s just one issue after another - even simple stuff like games ran from steam with proton have lots of issues that aren’t reported on protondb.
Got any good guides for bottles? I’ve tried it recently and then got stuck on literally step one: installing the gog launcher just throw errors, I tried the 2nd gog installer and that one just leads to a black screen when I run it. I’m not sure what to tinker with, whether I try a different bottle or where to even start
Sure, but nothing is theoretically stopping them from documenting every single data source input into the training module and then crediting it later.

Any chance someone can ELI5 this for me? I’ve been trying to game on Linux and I’m frustrated / confused enough with wine / lutris / proton an debugging their weird setups and interactions as it is.
Is singleplayer more compelling than Ark or Conan Exiles? Games like Valheim or Project Zomboid can completely take over my life but Ark/CE was always just kind of an aimless boring grind.

I used to in the beginning but soon realized it’s either kinda dead (people don’t use it, people from lemmy don’t even see it) or completely filled with spam (because the magazine has some generic tags).
It also didn’t work reliably and it wasn’t clear which posts go to Mastodon and which don’t, but that might have been resolved since.
It’s a neat idea for small discussions or questions that don’t warrant a thread, but it needs better implementation and wider adoption in order to be actually useful.
