Can I set your car on fire, and only let you out once you’ve shown me the fuse box?
There are a lot of safety situations where you need a mechanical release, where you won’t be able to find the mechanical release if it’s a separate control. Obviously the door itself is mechanical. What people are unhappy about is that it doesn’t easily open in some types of emergencies. Case in point.
Thank you for giving the explanation, but I think you’re getting flamed for it because it sounds like you’re saying that decision makes sense.
They introduced the design constraint. They can remove it, or work around it mechanically. They chose not to, and instead made a death-trap on purpose. I’m sure they had their reasons at the time, but they are by definition bad reasons if they led to this outcome.
Well, we need to do both.
We need to act now, like the graph with a sudden unprecedented downturn, and also to prepare for things to get worse than we’ve ever seen them get.
I don’t think we’ll do those things. But we could. It’s the current political and business leaders who aren’t willing to. Think about how everything changed during Covid. A lot of people even at the current level of realization would be willing to make serious changes if it put us off the doom-course.
“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”
Or, you could just have the door handle be the manual override.
It is a laughably easy thing to have the release for the door from the inside be the same kind of mechanical door release we’ve always done, for obvious safety reasons, and then have a little solenoid which can also trigger the release of the mechanical door release if the computer wants it to open.
The only reason to do it otherwise, and then need a separate manual release handle, is if you are okay with people dying in exactly this fashion so that you can make your shiny thing in the exact shiny way you want to make it.
We could do it.
That graph with all the lines taking all of a sudden a massive spike downwards, including China’s which right before D-day was climbing steadily upwards, looks like pure absurdist comedy, sure.
But we could do it. There’s still time.
Compare this:
Tell me why Armistice Day was more important than Veteran’s Day is.
I aim to engage thoughtfully with this topic while noting that the relative importance of these observances can vary based on personal and cultural perspectives.
Armistice Day, established to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, held unique significance as it marked humanity’s hope that WWI would truly be “the war to end all wars.” The original spirit was focused specifically on peace and the prevention of future wars. When the armistice was signed, there was a profound sense of collective relief and determination to ensure such devastating conflict would never happen again…
To this:
I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
Armistice Day has become Veterans’ Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans’ Day is not.
So I will throw Veterans’ Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don’t want to throw away any sacred things.
I find the second one more entertaining, more pleasant to read. If you want to call it that. I know translation is different from coming up with new text. But look again at the lyrics and the language in the second one.
I’m not trying to tell you that you’re wrong for wanting to read things that aren’t in English, or that there isn’t a place for machine translation so the information can get conveyed. I’m just saying that passing anything of value through this filter, and then presenting it as something for people consumption, is a bad idea compared with the other way.
It’s not enough to be able to put the words in the right order.
You have to know why they need to be said. Otherwise, it’s a big waste. Just throw the book in the bin and go spend some time outside instead.
The chorus of people who just now learned something new and were so excited they left a comment is absolutely wonderful.
I like how everyone else is saying, “Oh sweet! Look at this thing I just learned today!”
And then this guy is over here with “Well aktually espresso is totally different from drip coffee and so this totally unrelated thing Wikipedia was saying is all wrong I’m so smart.”
I think Lemmy needs some kind of daily “smart person contest” to draw off the energy that otherwise gets spent on trying to find someone to prove wrong in the comments at the expense of everything else. Lord knows, I need one of those too.
MAGA: We’re sick of all this new age bullshit FUCK YOUR FEELINGS real men are back, we’re telling it like it is, no more bullshit Seneca Andrew Tate we’re taking over whether you like it or not, don’t tread on me civil war 1776

“Inflation” to economists is how much the price is going up this month.
“Inflation” to most people is how much stuff costs.
It feels like there needs to be some acknowledgement of that when this is all talked about, after the superinflation of 2022. The goal should be that prices go back down, not that they go back to going up by 3% per year now that they’re way up high.
I think you are both right. I edited the title away from Newsweek’s misleading title, and added a note adding some context.
I’m not sure I should have posted this, to be honest, for that exact reason.
How long did you wait? Sometimes it takes some time for things to get federated.
As long as someone is subscribed to it from your home instance, it should get there, though.
Edit: A word
If they link directly to {instance}/c/{community} but not to !{community}@{instance} it can chime in with that second thing.
Most people link to something, but they don’t always link to the thing that works everywhere.
There should be a bot.
Actually, do you want me to make a bot? It wouldn’t be hard.
Somebody pointed out that when he does that weird jumping thing he’s started doing in stage appearances, he’s sticking his arms and legs all straight out spread apart, like he’s trying to make an X with his body.
I don’t know if that’s his goal, but a lot of people are saying it.
Fifty four THOUSAND dollars?
Are you high?
To me, that’s the killer flaw of these things.
It would be great if they were designed from the ground up to be good machines for running models, say with a GPU that had a copious amount of memory that didn’t cost $1,500 for an add-on. Unfortunately, to do that they’d have to create something from nothing, so instead they’ve added something that is worse than most GPUs, added some dumb software which is designed to pair with the ultimate result of disappointing people, and called it a day.
