Canada@lemmy.ca•Toronto man charged with “terrorism” for speaking out for Palestine
7·6 hours agoBut what is “contacting Hamas”? They’re still an administrative body. Did he contact the fire brigade? The health ministry? The law enforcement? The militant wing?
That’s part of the smoke screen that Israel has thrown up when defining what Hamas is. It’s not just a paramilitary organization, it was the actual governing body of Gaza with several divisions that are far removed from the actual fighting.
So when Israel says it’s killed 5 Hamas members, it actually killed traffic cops.
Edit: Regardless, to keep in line with actual info from the article and the legal proceedings - the TPS basically followed him around due to his involvement in anti-genocide protests and supposed “hate speech” but wasn’t charged with that.
They then contacted the counter terrorism office to conduct a raid on his home (mind you, still no charge) which they claim they found details of communication with a sanctioned group, which then applied the terrorism charge.

Toronto@lemmy.ca•Toronto: Chow 47%, Bradford 40%, Alexander 10%
3·6 hours agoYou’re right. Way too close for comfort!
I think Alexander is running to eventually drop out and tell his galvanized supporters to vote for Bad Badford.
A similar thing happened with the DNC in the US when they had a record number of candidates running against Bernie with a variety of policies just for all of them to eventually drop out and ask their base to vote for Biden.
You’re not making any sense, take care.

On Guard For Thee@lemmy.ca•Canada is becoming less accepting of gender diversity, new Statistics Canada data shows
2·18 hours agoI wish that were true, but it’s been reported on and researched extensively since at least 2021 on how algorithms push rightwing content. That’s why Spain took the stance of penalizing the companies responsible for the algorithms.
Twitter amplifies tweets from right-leaning political parties and news outlets more than from the left, its own research suggests.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-59011271
YouTube has a pattern of recommending right-leaning and Christian videos, even to users who haven’t previously interacted with that kind of content, according to a recent study of the platform’s suggestions to users. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/youtubes-algorithm-recommends-users-right-wing-religious-content-resea-rcna155478
Even when avatars signaled an exclusive interest in left-wing politics, right-wing perspectives continued to dominate their feeds, suggesting that platform amplification overrides user preference.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada adds 75,000 new jobs in July, unemployment rate lowest in 2 years
6·20 hours agosaid most of those gains were split between full- and part-time work, as wholesale and retail trade alone added 21,000 new jobs.
I remember reading the employment report a few months back and it said majority of the jobs were part-time.
Another reason why ‘unemployment rate’ isn’t the best metric, but it’s good enough for economists to write articles.

2·1 day agoI’m really hoping on mindsets changing, though very difficult given the media’s manufacturing of consent and empathy for some conflicts but not others.
I remember at the onset of the Russian invasion how one reporter (among many others) was openly racist in comparing Ukrainians to Middle Easterners
CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie D’Agata stated last week that Ukraine “isn’t a place, with all due respect, like Iraq or Afghanistan, that has seen conflict raging for decades. This is a relatively civilized, relatively European – I have to choose those words carefully, too – city, one where you wouldn’t expect that, or hope that it’s going to happen”.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney says Canada backs ICC but stays mum on Trump-sanctioned Canadian judge
21·2 days agoYou don’t even need a financial alternative.
Canada literally already has a law and administrative function “Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act (FEMA)”.
Carney is just a coward talking out of both sides of his mouth.
There are two things in the guys hand, a broom and a type of mop that’s common in that region.

Toronto@lemmy.ca•Toronto music series Promise Cherry Beach faces backlash after Palestine dispute
2·4 days agoanyone who feels that they have a lock on what is right and wrong in the Middle East” doesn’t know what they’re talking about and “needs to read a book.”
(Mind you, that this was simply in response to “free Palestine”)
So Irving Shaw is defending genocide with Israeli talking points that Dershowitz has used. He’s apparently educated about it and the entire Human Rights Community is not.
A long read but worthwhile for people interested:

Go ahead and request to mod, not much to it really.
Just FYI, once you’re given the mod role, you have a finite amount of time (not sure how much) to post and claim the mod role. That wasn’t explained very clearly

World News@lemmy.world•Israel Refused to Help Ukraine to Avoid ‘Upsetting Russia,’ Former UK Defence Secretary SaysEnglish
4·19 days agoRussia gave Syria S-300 and S-400 systems which could supposedly knock out some of the most advanced bomber jets, yet not one Israeli fighter was downed over Syria. And this is before F-35s existed.
Like you said, Israel playing both sides and both sides know it too.
Yes, and Iran invasion, and Cuba blockade, etc…
Again, we are not at open war (bullets flying, missiles dropping) for us to not care if centralization of power or when subverting parts of our democracy is happening.
The premise of the post and article is centralization of power as if it’s wartime, and we’re not at active war.

There are a couple of concepts but what comes to mind most is “Stalking Horse”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalking_horse
Basically a fake candidate with no hope of winning just to test the water on certain policies so they can eventually pull out and the other candidate assumes the winning policies + endorsement from fake candidate (and therefore their voter base).
40% + 10% is more than enough to win over Chow.
