Yes and no. I could hop on to a 50 year old Unix machine and operate it pretty much the way I use my contemporary Linux computer, thanks to the standard Unix tools being both great and ancient.

More and more I get to be the first person in the world with a specific problem, because no one else has used this tech with this environment configuration. Developing a solution is sometimes satisfying, but it’s sometimes hard explaining to the PM / customer why such a seemingly simple thing can take months to implement.
I work totally elsewhere, but my union’s collective agreement says that I get paid for 40% of my hourly wage each hour I’m on call. So 16 hours / day mon - fri, 24 hours / day sat - sun & public holidays. Extra compensations for calls in the middle of the night etc. also.
