  • Absolutely killing me right now to watch what’s going on in /r/worldnews re: the Gaza Strip. Absolute echo chamber of reposted IDF propaganda, genocidal rhetoric against Palestinians - all calls for peace, any contextualization or describing the history of the conflict get permabanned and muted, appeals to admins are denied as usual. Meanwhile, international observers describing the situation as an ongoing genocide. What do you call censoring a community to support that, besides “incitement to genocide”?

Site should be forever abandoned, they have lost every last shred of credibility.

  • Recognize your behavioral triggers. Could be anxiety, stress, etc. Try to actively recognize how you’re feeling before you engage in an addictive behavior, and then either do a substitute activity or find ways to (calmly) move your thoughts or feelings to a different place. The key concept is to divert your thinking that produces the addictive behavior.

Just my two cents, not a doctor but have broken an addiction or two.

  • It’s nuanced, but the idea that a bear would suddenly just “decide people are a threat/food” is misguided. The bottom line is it’s wilderness, the odds are very high they did something careless like surprise the bear or get between it and its cubs, which wouldn’t indicate atypical behavior on the bear’s part or suggest it’d pose extra danger in the future. Bottom line I don’t agree with the general approach of tourists wandering out in the woods, doing something careless which gets them killed, and then animals being killed indiscriminately as a result, I think it’s a very arrogant approach by people in general.

  • I guess you could use the same argument to say you’re buying less when you buy your laptop. It’s just arbitrary data I/O through USB with the software level interpreting it. They don’t have to ship a DAC or wifi radio (if they actually omitted that) or… whatever you call the component that’s part of a GPU that converts to HDMI - instead they offload that to the dongle or peripheral. In effect your device is just slowly being whittled down to a processor to USB bridge.

The headphone and USB ones are the ones I hate the most. My “flagship” phone doesn’t work with any of my ~15 pairs of headphones (mostly earbuds but a few actually nice ones) without an adapter. Booting up a laptop into a nix OS that doesn’t have wpa_supplicant etc. installed, no ethernet dongle or ethernet port, that’s about to be annoying.

This is more about laptops/phones than desktops btw. Normal sized desktops usually still ship with every port, plus one or two USB-C’s these days.
