I’m saying that AI companies have repeatedly shown a flagrant disregard for licenses, contracts, and the law, and have engaged in massive theft. Why should we expect that any contract would actually be honored? The whole thing is a huge fucking grift.

Our interview process has the candidate implement a couple (extremely simplistic) API routes, with the specific approach left up to the candidate. It’s more about having something they can talk through and evolve than it is about us looking for any specific approach.

Basically it exists as a way for us to have a starting point for talking about scalability topics, asking the candidate how they would evolve their implementation as we scale up the system. Does a pretty good job of giving us an idea of how they think through system design problems.

Companies trust other companies all the time, and it’s foundational to most all SLA/SLOs. Any time I’ve voiced concerns around how AI companies are using the data we are giving them (like giving them access to our codebase), it’s brushed off as “we have an agreement with them”. It’s just a load of hogwash. They can and will abuse all data they have access to, just as they have done thus far.

In this particular case, we are talking about a data center, and it is not at all reasonable to assume that the data that flows to said data center is in any way protected, especially one run by Musk.

I write code myself all day, as I have always done. And more and more software engineers are finally starting to see the consequences of relying on LLMs for software development.

Writing code has never been the bottleneck.

I do use quite a bit, but I also do a lot of different things. Compiling code, running docker containers, local web servers, an android emulator, slack, browser tabs for Jira/confluence/figma/etc., all adds up pretty quick.

8GB is definitely nowhere near enough, at least for what I need to do.

I’m worried about nix, honestly. An absolute truckload of nix packages pull their source from GitHub. It’s the primary way to distribute flakes, too.

I make more money than most people in the US, in the top 6% of earners. $2k/month is still a significant amount of money and not something I could afford to do, at least not without significant sacrifice.

That being said, I have a wife and 2 kids I support, and we have a house. A normal house, not extravagant (slightly more than the median house price in the US, which is very high). But all of that does cost a lot of money, so even though the amount I make sounds like a lot, when you actually pay for everything you need to live a modestly comfortable life, it adds up.

If I didn’t have anyone else to support and was just living in an apartment, I could probably swing $2k/month, but it’s still not insignificant. You could do a lot with that kind of money.

To be honest, someone behaving the way that you describe would make me think that they don’t work for their money, or at least, not all of it. Sounds like someone really affluent that has a lot of family money. Normal people in the US generally can’t afford to do something like that.

That’s without any taxes, though. It’s $4563/month after just federal income tax. Add in other taxes and $2000 is probably easily 50% of the median income.

Libertarians aren’t the brightest bunch to begin with, but regardless, saying “look at this community that was wrong” in response to people wanting to remove central authority is not really an argument against the idea.

The entire point is that people are free to govern themselves. Governing well is up to the local communities. Some would do better than others, certainly. But with time, people would discover what works and what doesn’t. They would make mistakes like these and learn from the natural consequences of their actions. It’s imperfect because humans are imperfect.

“not suited for human life”? Really? 10°C is… incredibly mild. Most humans are comfortable at that temperature with just a jacket and maybe a hat.

Cold weather is all about actually dressing appropriately. Every person I’ve ever heard bitch and moan about it are never dressed appropriately. With the right clothing, you can be comfortable at most any low temperature (obviously, extremely low temperatures require specialized clothing/equipment).

The same cannot be said for hot weather, where extreme heat is both dangerous and unavoidable.

I suppose it depends on what kind of AI we’re talking about. If you mean LLMs, then I certainly hope no one is trying to do something as foolish as that.

A lot of the stuff from James Webb is truly novel, as well, which no AI technology would be useful in understanding.

I never understood how anyone found those remotely interesting. Maybe they’re just supposed to be funny but… I don’t know. I don’t get it. Always just seemed like taking an assortment of questions and stretching the implications of one’s answers to the point of incredulity in order to shoehorn them into one of the set outcomes.

The title of this post makes for a dumb headline, at any rate. Linus, in response to claims in the industry that projects are now “99% written by AI”, drew an analogy to compilers by saying that all machine code for projects are written by compilers, yet no one says their project was 100% written by a compiler. It’s just talking about stupid hype, which is valid.

That being said, it’s still quite unfortunate that Linus has fallen into the trap of LLMs.
