We have democratic super majorities in the CA legislature. They could impeach a Republican governor the same moment he was being sworn in, on the excellent grounds that a Republican top two primary does not remotely reflect the will of the electorate. Even they refuse, there’s recall, and in the mean time the legislature can prevent the governor from doing much of anything.

There’s no reason to be overly worried about it.

All of that said, I think status quo Democrats share a lot of the blame for how this country got into this state, and failing to stop a candidate like Becerra really doesn’t bode well for recovery.

How did you get the impression that default is the most likely outcome? Borrowing costs for the US are likely to rise, but there isn’t any particular reason to expect outright default.

All of this reminds me so much of Windows, and before it, Facebook. “Accidentally” hoovering up all your data repeatedly, and making you responsible for stopping it.

Yep - the argument from companies that game prices “have to” go up is total bs. The marginal cost of producing an extra copy of a game is effectively zero, so the overall price can come down as the market grows. They are, as always, charging what they think will bring in the most money.

You know its even worse than that - fascist or fascist adjacent parties are leading in polls in the UK, France, and Germany simultaneously. Canada and Australia only avoided electing mini trumps as a response to trump. And that’s only speaking of the larger countries. When I hear someone on here go off about how the “world” has always known the US is just bad I’m amazed. Can you not see what is happening in your own countries? International capital is making its move, and something is happening across the democratic world.

If Trump felt beholden to congress, he would not have gotten approval. He would have had to spend years spreading propaganda and trying to build up a case, like Bush did. All that effort might have prevented him from doing it at all.

More importantly, doing this is trying to peel off people who might waver because Maduro is unsympathetic. It highlights that yes, this is a dictatorship in the making.
