  • I don’t like homeless encampments, tent cities, favelas etc. They are unsafe, unclean and foster destructive behavior.

Let’s destroy them by building safe, permanent homes for people.

It’s so strange to me that “free market capitalism” lovers can’t see that encampments are a market response. There is a large supply of unenclosed space (parks, sidewalks, underpasses) and an unmet demand for shelter. They shouldn’t be surprised when market participants convert the former into the latter.

How effective do they think it will be to police every unenclosed space in the region vs building adequate shelter. Building shelter has all sorts of associated benefits too.

  • I’d probably start designing and building a rolling ball clock/ sculpture, then hit some sort of obstacle and switch to making a self recirculating eddy current tube, get frustrated and try to design and build an electronically commutated counter rotating propeller driver, get frustrated and try to build a garage sized 3d printer, get frustrated and try to build a delayed action door closer get frustrated and try to build a co-planar compound cycloidal reducer, get frustrated and then forget my wife’s anniversary until 4pm the day before.

  • Would this more intricate engineering result in a noticeably better product for the average guitarist? Would it just be a niche curiosity for audiophiles and engineers?

This is AskSCIENCE so it’s not surprising that you would approach the musings from this perspective.

But OPs idea is about the intersection of science and art. I think the question is really: Would some of these ideas result in an output signal that was controllable in a new way?

Imo this modification would empower an artist to interact with their guitar in a novel and creative way? Do I think we’ll see mass adoption, no, but I think there are definitely people out there that would be interested in playing a guitar with pickups like this. Even if it’s just part of their creative process.

  • I think OP is interested in the role of oscillation planes because with an acoustic guitar, exciting a string parallel (lateral) to the guitar vs perpendicular to the guitar has a perceptible difference in tone.

OP believes that this difference isn’t captured by common electric guitar pickups.

From what I’ve read in this thread common pickups measure the speed of the string, basically considering both planes of vibration the same. But an acoustic guitar responds more to the perpendicular oscillations than the lateral oscillations. (Because the perpendicular plane oscillations tends to work the bridge/soundboard, and push air towards and away from the sound hole).

Although I agree that ultimately the string’s oscillation is pretty much circular/cylindrical/bi-conical, but I suspect there is a significant transient effect that could be explored/exploited with redesigned pickups.

I’m also curious if it would be possible to use a string with a [section of] non-circular cross section to allow the [creation and] detection of torsional vibrations.

  • I’m not the person you were replying to but thought I’d weigh in.

Canada attempted/committed (results varied) genocide of its first nations not by killing children (though they did do that) but by making continuation of indigenous ways of living/ culture untenable.

China is attempting genocide of its Uigher population in a similar way.

Russia’s denial of Ukrainian identity and treatment of orphaned Ukrainian children is also genocidal.

Genocide is the attempt to destroy a nation/ ethnicity. It doesn’t have to be murder factories to be genocide.

    Do you agree?

  • Canadaland focuses on Canada, so Jesse tries to ask questions that are relevant to Canadians

journalism is supposed to be about distributing factual information

I have a friend in Canada that I know is trying to figure out if he should send his daughter to public school (eventually, she is still quite young) where she could face anti-Semitic treatment from peers/teachers, or Jewish day school where she could be murdered by extremists. (I think he was already more inclined towards public schools)

His concern is because of the increase in attacks on centers of Jewish community (eg schools & synagogues) in Canada. The increase in those attacks is because of Israel’s disproportionate response to the Oct 7th attacks.

The question of Israel’s accountability is probably quite relevant to him.

  • I agree it’s strange and possibly inappropriate that the fact check was a text document, not a podcast.

But I really don’t think he was acting as a mouthpiece the way you’re accusing him. He repeatedly asked about the head of the Israeli military characterizing events as Jewish terrorism.

I think it’s important to ask what responsibility Israel has for the safety of Jewish Canadians when hatecrimes rise as a result of Israeli military operations.
