I’ve been doing typelit.io and typing out a whole book, which I think is helping since it’s a more realistic typing scenario. I’d love to see your layout if you’re willing to share, I’m always interested in seeing peoples’ different approaches.

I was at about 80 WPM before I’d say. In the beginning and when I first made this post I was putting in at least an hour of practice every day. After this post I hit a wall the practice stopped yielding as much improvement which hurt my motivation. I’m still sticking with it though, and since 60 is fast enough to work without issue, I figure my speed will improve naturally over time.

I’m still enjoying the journey, and I’ve been having fun getting function layers working and trying to work my way towards eliminating keys!

Not much yet. I’m improving now at a super slow rate, but it’s mostly a measurement issue. In the real world, I’ve noticed improvement that isn’t reflected in speed tests alone. My accuracy is still the biggest thing holding me back. When I get a good streak going I can get pretty quick, but it’s wrecked when I have to go back and fix a typo.

Thanks, I think those early speed gains were exciting so I wanted to keep that up but it’s not totally realistic. Doing day-to-day stuff and building speed over time makes sense though.

It’s been about 3 weeks. Yeah that makes sense, I do feel like I’ve noticed that while my speed test results are not changing as fast, my ability to actually do stuff has been getting better.

Thanks all who replied and shared their experiance! For now, I’m going to learn colemak dh and keep trying on the learning curve. From what I’ve tried so far, it seems like my problems with the ortho keyboard were mostly due to my bad form on qwerty. Now that I’m learning colemak (with proper form) it seems like I can pretty much swap between ortho and staggered without much issue. Now I just have to build the muscle memory for the new layout!

By layout on 1 do you mean the actual changed keyboard shape (ortho etc) or the layout of the letters (ie colemak)? I actually feel less worried about changing away from QWERTY since I can always configure that on my laptop, but I can’t change the physical shape of my laptop keyboard haha!

Miso soup is my go-to breakfast. You can get dashi powder and miso paste, then just heat water in the kettle and combine. I love that it’s warm and flavorful, but actually a pretty light breakfast (which I prefer).

Same, privacy concerns are huge for me. Also, there’s no way I’m paying $18.99 a month for it, that’s comically expensive. It’s the same as Netflix’s top tier plan, and at least Netflix has the expense of producing their own content to (attempt) to justify that cost.

Thanks! Using them alongside torrents seems to be a good idea. Maybe it would improve my ability to find more obscure stuff!

Thanks, yeah the impression I’ve gotten before is that it’s mostly the same. But maybe using it as a backup for my normal torrents could be useful for more niche stuff that I can’t find in private trackers…

Thanks! Working better with the arrs is a sell for sure. I have my setup pretty well tuned for torrents, but still sometimes it can’t find something that meets my filters because it’s not named/categorized correctly.

Awesome, yeah that makes sense. My biggest worry/confusion was about how more niche releases end up on there and so that clears things up. I’ve mostly been happy with what I can find via private trackers, so maybe it makes sense to stick with that.

As opposed to a corperate social media site, Lemmy has waaaay lower operating costs (not servers). It’s open source so dev work is volunteer, and there isn’t a bunch of resources dedicated to squeezing users for every penny or appeasing advertisers.

Servers can get pricey for sure, but not having all of that other overhead goes a ways to making it more sustainable.
