Like you want the guest list in the title?
I’m a huge fan of both his novels and his blogging.
Goggins is a treasure. Between Righteous Gemstones, I’m a Virgo and Invincible he’s killing it all over right now.
Huh, what’s the logic to doing it on shuffle working better than the original order?
I went back and watched the other old Star Treks after not having watched them when they aired but Voyager was the one that seemed not worth my while. Should I check it out?
Justified is coming up on my list to watch for the first time.
Just finished rewatching Invincible inspired by the new season being out, now just started on The Good Place.
Wow you are unpleasant
I don’t think I can agree with you there. Solar power is an incredibly valuable technology, in many ways more so than nuclear. If we were replacing this nuclear energy with increased solar I’d have no complaint. The problem is solar is already growing as fast as it can with or without shutting down any nuclear plants, so what it’s actually replaced with as discussed in this article is fossil fuels. Hopefully the solar curve can catch up eventually and shut down those fossil fuels as well, but it’s ridiculous to ditch nuclear before then.
Hard to imagine how anyone who’s concerned about climate change could see shutting down a carbon-free energy source as a “green win”.
This is a public facing site, none of that data is secret.
Probably just a minor processing error in your sound driver and nothing to worry about. I think I have had a similar experience with a particular white noise machine with hearing some slightly patterned sound when there wasn’t really a pattern. If it’s bothering you or increasing can’t hurt to go see a doctor (well can’t hurt too bad as long as you’re insured…) and get their input.
First few paragraphs of the post:
Today, we’re excited to announce that the Bluesky network is federating, or opening up in a way that allows you to host your own data. What does this mean?
Your data, such as your posts, likes, and follows, needs to be stored somewhere. With traditional social media, your data is stored by the social media company whose services you’ve signed up for. If you ever want to stop using that company’s services, you can do that—but you would have to leave that social network and lose your existing connections.
It doesn’t have to be this way! An alternative model is how the internet itself works. Anyone can put up a website on the internet. You can choose from one of many companies to host your site (or even host it yourself), and you can always change your mind about this later. If you move to another hosting provider, your visitors won’t even notice. No matter where your site’s data is managed and stored, your visitors can find your site simply by typing the name of the website or by clicking a link.
We think social media should work the same way. When you register on Bluesky, by default we’ll suggest that Bluesky will store your data. But if you’d like to let another company store it, or even store it yourself, you can do that. You’ll also be able to change your mind at any point, moving your data to another provider without losing any of your existing posts, likes, or follows. From your followers’ perspective, your profile is always available at your handle—no matter where your information is actually stored, or how many times it has been moved.
Federation lets services be interconnected, so there are a variety of apps and experiences that users can move between as fluidly as they do on the open web.The version of federation that we’re releasing today is intended for self-hosters. There are some guardrails in place to ensure we can keep the network running smoothly for everyone in the ecosystem. After this initial phase, we’ll open up federation to people looking to run larger servers with many users. For a more technical overview of what we’re releasing today and how to participate, check out the developer blog.
Some of our existing features already follow the federated philosophy, including usernames and feeds. Today, we’re opening up federation for data hosting. Below, we wanted to answer some common questions about what federated hosting is, what it means for your experience using Bluesky, and why we’re so excited about it.
No the American and Chinese government ones that have launched so far are both robotic. This Dream Chaser one that’s supposed to test this year is manned though, we’ll see how that goes.
Well yes mooooooar economic growth has always been an incredibly positive thing for humanity and space based growth would be no different.
That analogy makes nonsense of your description of humanity metastasizing into space though - the equivalent being a cancer expanding and gathering resources from outside of the body it’s embedded in? If anything it’s the obvious solution to the problem of our putting too much strain on Earth’s ecosystem - let us spread that strain to other worlds where there’s no ecosystem to damage.
Yeesh sounds like you are down on humanity generally, referring to the growth of our civilization as “metastasizing” like it’s a cancer. I don’t expect that expanding into space will solve any big metaphysical problems or anything, but you shouldn’t turn your nose up so quickly at the benefits of growth. The first space settlements beyond little research outposts probably will be some kind of resource extraction, since any human settlement needs to be economically viable and that’s what they’ve got up there. I’d be very happy to make the world a lot richer with cheap raw materials while reducing the need for environmentally damaging mining on Earth where there’s an environment to damage.
Huh, works for me. Here’s the link directly if that helps: https://gizmodo.com/spaceplanes-space-shuttle-dream-chaser-aerospace-tech-1851242276
Yeah thinking about the giant challenges of building a settlement on Mars really puts in perspective the much much much harder problem of sending people to another star system.
