  • I’m able to sleep almost immediately basically wherever I lay my head, so I’ve never really had any problems sleeping. However the most important change I’ve ever made for sleep quality was how I consume caffeine. Yes, I believe you can fall asleep while totally wired, I can too. The problem is that the sleep quality will be terrible and definitely can contribute to insomnia.

So first, the FDA nailed the appropriate amount of caffeine in a day. Don’t consume more than 400mg in a day, and keep track. Too much caffeine with overstimulate you and will contribute to any feelings of anxiety while awake or trying to sleep.

Second, stop consuming caffeine several hours before bed. The biological half life of caffeine is between 6-8 hours, so if you have 400mg at 2pm, you’ll still have roughly 200mg in your system at 10pm. That’s where your sleep quality will get impacted. My personal rule is that I should space out my consumption over the morning, and stop having any caffeine at all in the afternoon.

  • The only mass production ethical chocolate I trust is Tony’s Chocolonely, because they’re the most transparent about how they source their chocolate, acknowledge that they can never be perfect in their goal, and actively try to improve conditions for workers that grow cocoa. I will also buy local artisan chocolate while traveling.

Basically, I’ve decided that chocolate isn’t worth the neo-imperialism and slave labor.

  • It’s like you have no historical context for the topic you’re trying to discuss. They do have some heavy industry, they produce 4% of worldwide nickel (and therefore also cobalt). Oil production is also heavy industry. They didn’t develop it very much because it’s an island, so after the Cuban revolution they relied on the USSR for heavy industry. That was a major flaw in international soviet socialism, relying on the USSR for most industry. However it made sense for an island nation, but impacted them substantially after the USSR was illegally disbanded.

This article has the backdrop of the energy revolution program within the country, started in 2005 to diversify energy production and fight climate change. You want to talk about how the embargo hasn’t impacted them? Let’s start with how they’ve been trying to modernize and decarbonize for 20 years, but hurricanes, the embargo, and the historical effects of the embargo have hindered this program.

  • So a couple things:

    1. I’m not entirely blaming the US embargo, the Cuban government is also at fault and are responsible for ensuring food security and electrical production.
    2. It’s ridiculous to claim that the embargo hasn’t seriously hindered the growth of Cuba or made it more difficult to maintain status quo for their citizens. The embargo prevents any trade with the Cuba if it involves the US, including foreign companies that want to do business in the US. Food and medicine purchases are allowed but still bound with significant red tape.

  • No, because its nonsense tribalism. I haven’t seen any actual consistency in nonsense takes between any particular instances, with only a couple of extreme examples (explodingheads, grad, yddrasil, etc) that are already blocked or dehosted. ML has more socialists, because lemmy was a little leftist community project at first and it’s one of the oldest and biggest instances. Big instances also have a lot of idiots. World has a reputation for a lot of idiots, because it’s by far the biggest instance. That doesn’t mean everyone, or even most people, are idiots that are on the instance.
