  • Okay so largely bc of lemmy’s trekkie community I’m partway through my first viewing of Star Trek and enjoying it (starting with TOS ofc). And at some point the first yeoman gets replaced so I looked into it, some sexual harassment apparently she comes back later in a subsequent series. But then I thought I noticed Lt Uhura was also suddenly gone from the show. She wasn’t, she was just not prominent for most of an episode, but before that it made me look into Uhura as well, hoping nothing irl made her leave the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that actually she HAD considered leaving the TOS for some other gig but had actually discussed with Martin Luther King Jr. prior. Turns out one of the only shows MLK Jr. allowed his children to watch was Star Trek because of the representation of an equal society, and when confronted with Nichelle Nichols’ desire to leave the show he became upset. He told her ‘Don’t you understand for the first time we’re seen as we should be seen. You don’t have a black role. You have an equal role.’

  • Same experience, just crunchy water or when cooked down will soak up whatever flavor you give it. Have also grown to recognize and enjoy the flavor even more but it’s still just incredibly mild/subtle unless eating it straight up. Coincidentally I feel the same way as the people complaining about it but with bell peppers or fennel instead. Chicken salad, soups and stews, Chinese food, all delicious with celery and onion combo. I’ll even substitute celery for a green veg in something like a curry instead of peas which I find too sweet, for example. I got the yummy cilantro gene too lol perception and sensitivity are a hell of a thing

  • Buddy of mine was a DACA kid whose parents are extreme bolsanaro/trump nutjobs, and he is as well. They went so far as to get their own citizenship but demanded he earn his own. He was actually curious about my side of the story, but not because he could be persuaded of anything, he just wanted to hear what a leftist in this country thinks.

Dude was all about the machismo. He couldn’t get a license but drove a truck anyway, wasn’t allowed to own guns but bought them anyway, etc and was VERY paranoid about police and getting kicked out of the country. This was about 10 years ago almost.

He always said he’d vote for Trump if he could. Wonder where he is now.

  • Anecdotal, but from my time in school most people actually did. AP US history was the straw that broke the camel’s back for all of the stu-co honors society top 15 kids I had that class with. The most hated class, just absolutely whinging about the sheer onerousness of the exam and study guide. My theory has always been their heads were already full to the brim with memorizing the physics and maths and other classes’ materials. History is just too much to memorize and regurgitate like that, it requires thinking, and a lot of it. I came away from that experience with the understanding that a lot of people fucking hate thinking any more than they have to, even (or especially) a-political folks. Loved that class, we had an excellent teacher too. S-tier teacher, really cool guy.
