In my state
Is it the state of Chaos?
Yeah, I definitely remember when they started showing things I didn’t ask for, and I thought “I don’t like that”, but I stuck around because I could ignore posts I didn’t care about.
It took a little while, but I eventually started to play “how far can I scroll before I get something I didn’t ask for?”
Shortly after that, I realized I actually had to start playing “how far until I get something I did ask for?”.
Once I realized that, I cut back significantly. I still go from time to time when I’m stuck waiting in line or something, but it broke my daily habit. I miss what it used to be, but I certainly don’t miss what it is.
How do you define “compete”?
Here they are on opposite corners of the same intersection.
Sure, that’s only one example, but I’m not sure how well I can Google “Kroger near an [Albertsons|Randalls|Safeway]” to find a list.
The transition from analog to digital really hurt my desire to watch OTA TV (you caught me! I’m not under 25).
With analog broadcast, any weak signal or interference produced a little bit of static, but you could still see and hear what was being said. With digital, any weak signal means dropped frames and silence or weird glitches. You completely lose what’s happening. Even with a powered antenna, I have frequent issues with weak signal. I could probably try to get a rooftop antenna installed, but there’s no guarantee it would be any better. It’s just easier to find other entertainment at this point.
Keep in mind that many red states have attempted to essentially ban online porn with their overbearing age-verification laws. A savvy internet user would be less likely to pick an exit node in a red state, given the choice.

That assumes you can unplug it. Most devices I own have the camera built right into the device, and it can sometimes be hard to find an option that doesn’t include it. I have a Webcam cover on my desktop and laptop.
I haven’t seen one that would work for my phone, but if someone has hacked my phone, I probably have bigger issues.
KnowBe4 has an article about their experience.
They also covered at least one other instance in the US.
So, if I grab an item off the shelf and browse around the store for a while, is the price going to be the price currently displayed or the price when I grabbed it?
If it’s the current price, what’s the point of a price tag? If I can’t actually know the price until checkout, then showing me the price is kind of a useless bit of data. I also suspect that the “speak to a manager” types would make that a major headache for stores.
If it’s the price when I grabbed it, how are they keeping track of that? I see two ways of handling that: one requires that you use their app to shop, and the other requires cameras and “machine vision” that are still unreliable, at best. The former seems more likely, but I doubt either is going to sit well with customers.
Edit: someone pointed out that it might not actually display a price, and you’d have to scan it to get your price. Kind of like the first option, but I think it’s going to turn off less tech savvy customers.
I haven’t seen that aspect addressed in any articles about the “feature”.
Thanks! It’s surprisingly difficult to get Germans to correct me on things. Most of them are just happy that I can speak it at all, so they tell me not to worry about the little stuff. 😂
Was Sprachen Sie spricht? (Deutsch/German)
I’m not a native speaker, but I’m pretty sure it’s
Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie?
assuming you want to be formal, which feels a little weird to me in the context of an internet forum.
Edit: but to answer your question: fluent English, mehr als ein Bißchen Deutsch, y un poquito Español.
For the first 80% of your comment, I was definitely picturing a small backpack on the bird, and I was wondering what the purpose of tiny perches would be.
The idea of “standing” has never really sat right with me.
“Sure, the law seems pretty unconstitutional, but until it actually hurts someone, why should we fix it?”
Maybe because you have the power to fix a bad thing.
After they know my default state, will I be self-conscious? Will I regret it? Will they ever forget it, or will it shadow my every move and our every conversation? Will they become too aware, watch me too closely?
I’m friends with a few recovering alcoholics, and we’ve had conversations about similar issues. They make a joke about alcohol, which would be normal in most contexts, and now I’m not sure if I can laugh at it. They say they “went out last night”, and there’s a small, but perceptible change in the conversation because I’m bracing for bad news.
I don’t want to have those reactions, but it feels callous to ignore them. I know I’m not my brother’s keeper, but I still want good things for my friends.
