Another dual use is to line your food items carrier (in case there is one) with someone’s foam pad, and it’ll insulate the food from the direct heat of the sun.

2·7 days agoExcellent! Here’s one who was waiting to hear how this experiment would go. Great to hear of your success 👌
They are quality bricklaying guide line, I’ve found that stuff is pretty robust. Used a set of the same stuff for my camping setup for some seven years and not one has failed (and nature has tried!). This use is obviously very different, they’re out in the open all the time, so more than anything I’m getting practical experience whether the stuff is sufficient.
The tripod is wooden, it’ll be finished in three years, so no sense in guying it with steel. If the mesh proves useful to the community, I’ll build better - the same design but out of aluminium.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Has anyone tried Amber for writing bash scripts? Would you recommend it?
2·9 days agoLet’s also remind that at least Helix the very good editor automatically runs bash stuff through Shellcheck if you have it installed, while you type. It’s been amazingly useful and educational. I write a lot of bash at work and have learned many finer details from Shellcheck’s hints.
It even does the Clippy thing. I’m piping something into a sed s/…/… and it tips ‘try ${variable//search/replace} instead’.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•I want a compact mini laptop(netbook style) in 2026. Suggestions?
1·10 days agoMy vote on this too. Had a Surface Go 1, small battery but elsewise superb. Got a 3rd gen, absolutely perfect until one day it wouldn’t charge off USB-C anymore. Sold that and returned to the 1st gen I stii had (all accessories are compatible), and it’s still serving just fine as a ‘quick errands’ machine. Both work out of the box with Arch. Battery life is good enough with TLP and extreme powersaving.

Crazy Fucking Videos@lemmy.world•Crazy video of what users of the Temu app have to endureEnglish
2·10 days agoCheck out Yazio. Couple of years back, it was a great tool for T1Ds like myself to get the carbohydrate content of whatever is about to be eaten. Now it’s degenerated to exactly like the OP video. Can’t imagine anyone using it still enjoying the stupid gamification / ‘engagement’ they bolted on.

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] How to set resolution to a portion of a screen or just screen share part of one?
2·19 days agoOn Sway:
This goes in Sway’s config…
output HEADLESS-1 { pos 5120,0 mode 1920x1080@20Hz bg ~/tausta_kuva fill }And this alias starts wayvnc.
alias RuutuVNC='swaymsg create_output && nohup wayvnc 0.0.0.0 5900 >/dev/null &'After that, connect the VNC client on the tablet to port 5900 on the machine and sail the mouse cursor over to it when selecting the screen to share.
There must have been a config for wayvnc somewhere, but I can’t find it. I don’t need to use this anymore after switching from a dual portrait setup to a dual LG DualUp setup, so that my screens are now pretty much square and the right way around. On the dual portrait setup, my screenshare would show up sideways in landscape :D

Meshtastic@mander.xyz•Reticulum - Post Internet Network - Why HF Modems?
3·20 days agoI’m involved with advancing Meshcore in my country, and started my journey with Reticulum. Love it. However, no-one else seems to share the passion for it. There’s always someone going ‘what, rectum?!’ and the rest haven’t even heard of it. It’s almost as if it has some kind of a public image crisis in the HAM spheres here. Why might that be? Should have been called ‘UNMQ-XQ’ for Universal Networking Mark Qvist - Extra Cool to fit the canon?

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] How to set resolution to a portion of a screen or just screen share part of one?
3·20 days agoI have funky screen configurations too. What I’ve done is setup a headless screen that I view over VNC on a tablet and share that. On Wayland wayvnc can do this.

1·25 days agoNothing much – dd, support for ext3 which was the style at the time, and whatever the wired Ethernet in that old thing is. Sshfs would be nice.
No need for a graphical environment. One thing that might be broken is the graphics adapter, since the machine supposedly boots every time, but once it gets into the display manager, it freezes. I figured if I keep it in text mode, it might stay up long enough for making a disk image. I haven’t yet got on with the operation, so I don’t know what the machine has.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What kind of names do pubs or other drinking establishments have in your country?
2·30 days agoStory time. When living in Helsinki, Finland my group of friends was approached by some tourists. ‘Excuse me, we’re looking for this pub’. Okay, lots of them around, which one? ‘It’s called, like, the bubble on the hill…?’
Took a good ten seconds of head scratching and then one of us got it. Mäkikupla! Literally Bubble On The Hill but since the names are so random over here, none of us had given second thought about the funny name.
Told this story online and a Finnish person posted a confession. They’d been in Australia or whereever and recommended that particular place to someone. Looks like someone remembered.

If this is due to Steam, which wants those 32-bit libs, one solution is to install Steam with Flatpak. Uninstall Steam from the pacman side with pacman -Rss to get rid of the unnecessary 32-bit libraries and the niggles they cause.
