Ironically the one thing computers are normally good at.

I disagree, since the Internet allows indie studios for things like music and games to reach a massive audience. Selling your indie game that you made with your friends for $20 to 300k people makes you a millionaire without exploiting anyone. As long as you can avoid publishers leeching most of that away… Plenty of people also have become millionaires just by selling their house and moving somewhere cheaper.
Millionaire refers to total wealth or cash on hand, not annual salary. Someone making $1M a year is probably worth $100M+ if they own stocks and may be well on their way to billionaire.
What are the chances of everyone interested in this project already having a tablet? I don’t own any, and I certainly wouldn’t be going out to buy one just to test running Linux on it. I do have multiple old phones I could turn into development test devices however. Anything is better than nothing.
I already had a server running docker, so throwing a few more containers in was trivial. There’s a docker-compose.yml published in the lemmy repo.
Since my server was already running and had free space, it was literally free, but if you’re starting from scratch there’s more to consider.
I’ve been self-hosting for over a year now, and the storage does add up. The postgres DB is 11GB, and pictrs service is getting bigger at 29GB. Between all the different services, it can eat up a decent bit of CPU. My (admittedly 10 year old CPU) sits at a load average of 1.9, so you’ll probably want 3 or 4 cores minimum. And based on my stats, 4GB of ram should be just enough to keep everything loaded.
I think this largely depends on the system they’re using for billing. In Canada, most restaurant systems bill by seat anyway, so it’s easy to print multiple receipts or a combined one. A lot of systems in the US bill by table, so the waiter is the one who has to do all the math.
After reading that I’m still really confused who these cars were stolen from. From the sounds of things, the current owners are losing their newly bought vehicles only for them to get put back on a dealer lot, which is just insane.
Surely by now the original owners have already claimed insurance on their stolen vehicles? The police repossessing them from legal purchasers who were unaware just seems like it’s making the whole situation worse.
Normally the term for this is headless rendering, but I think in this case it’s more like head-only rendering 😆
I’ve done the same math recently and decided it would be cheaper just to pay myself and keep a bit of savings around for anything extra. I could not find a plan that would pay out more than $2k in a year, and that’s not even a month of rent some places.
The dental insurance plans available in the US are basically a scam for adults because they have an annual maximum of $1-2k. You have to get a lot of cleanings before you even break even with the premium, and if something major happens you’re basically not even covered.
IMO you may as well just have that $1-2k saved up yourself and pay for your own dental appointments.
A Raspberry PI should be fine for direct play, but it doesn’t really have the processing power to transcode. Check to see which mode you’re in.
If you want the ability to live transcode, you’d probably have better luck with an old laptop or PC with a dedicated GPU (Even the lowest end ones have the same video encoding hardware in each generation, I use a GTX 1050).
Who else downloaded LimeWire Pro using LimeWire?
In theory it makes it possible for other games to use the same items to make stuff in their games (I doubt this in practice)
I’ve heard this before, but there’s literally nothing preventing games from setting up some shared items on their own without NFTs. Nobody does it because companies want to keep their IP, and worrying about external items would be a nightmare to balance.
NFTs solve like 1% of the problem of sharing items. So much more goes into making them actually work. For example: NFT id 5551337 is owned by the player: now what? How do you figure out what 3d model to render? What actions can you perform? How does it integrate with other systems? All of that is going to have to be custom for every game involved on a per-item basis.
I hope this becomes available before my teeth start having problems… Now that I think about it, I think I’ll go brush my teeth now.
If I owned a trailer I’d be so worried about this. There was a local story around here of someone who had their race car on a trailer hooked up to their truck at a hotel. When they woke up the trailer and car were gone. Idk if they ever found it… the race car was not registered.
It’s easy enough to throw a block of wood or something under the tire. They probably just aren’t thinking about it.
I work on my own car and I’m always paranoid about it shifting or rolling while I’m under it, so I double up on jack stands / wheel chocks / floor jack wherever I can.
I hope this customer is being charged for these orphaned systems. They’ll care more if it’s costing them money.
It can start out a little like Office Space, doing all the standard tricks like walking in the front door with your arms full and in a hurry. And it always works. Until they hit the final boss: an IT security worker who has built an impenetrable fortress inside the company. Then it turns into Mission Impossible.
I think it was assumed based on your use of command line and unix-like paths such as ~/Desktop
, which do not work in Windows Command Prompt. (Powershell has aliases for unix commands like ls
, so unix paths do work there)
I think The Onion has better taste than to joke about this topic.
