I had made one for lemmy.world and lemmy.ml, not really knowing what I was doing just checking out the different sites. Is there a point in having multiple accounts or can I just access everything with one account?

only reason I made several is to “claim” my username on different lemmy instances. I’m hoping at some point I can merge or link them somehow

You can access almost everything, but some instances are either defederated, or federation may be unreliable at times. You may also wish to create communities on another instance for whatever reason. For now, you’re prolly fine and then you’ll see.

In general no, you can see everything from one account. The reasons for having multiple accounts are approximately the same as for Reddit, such as having a NSFW account separate from your regular account. The only additional concern with Lemmy is that some instances defederate from each other. Unless your account is on the instance that’s defederated though, it won’t affect you.

I created one Lemmy account first, then a week later I discovered Kbin. Since there are currently some federation issues, I’m checking in on both accounts.

As long as the instances are federated you can access all of Lemmy from 1 account, regardless of if you have an account there.

Lemmy.world and lemmy.ml are, you you can access anything on either instance from either account.

Hypothetically though, if lemmy.ml is federated with another instance that lemmy.world isn’t, then you would need to access the content there from the .ml account, because you would not be able to from the .world account.

Other reasons you might want more than 1 account might be

You might want to separate what kind of content you have on which account, maybe have a separate account for posting or commenting on NSFW content that’s separate from your main account. Or maybe you use one account for serious business and another for memes/shit posting/novelty stuff. Maybe you’re a celebrity and have an account for when you want to publicly be that celebrity, and another for when you want to just anonymously browse

Redundancy - if you have a lemmy.world account and for whatever reason the .world servers crap out, you you could still access most of Lemmy from your .ml account, including (disclaimer: I think this is how it works, but I’m still learning, so I may be a little off) the .world content (but any new posts or comments you make to a .world community won’t be synced to every other federated instance until the .world servers are back up)
