I think when I read this as a kid, this was the first story where I really appreciated the artwork. Some of the caricatures haven’t aged well, but it was a well-crafted story in that the larger arc was comprehensible to a lil kid but there were also plenty of more in-depth details such as depictions of colonialism, and of the Japanese Invasion of Manchuria, etc.
It’s kind of wild how we came at Tintin from such different angles. You as a “lil kid,” and me… as an 19yr-old who didn’t finish the complete set of albums until maybe 10-15yrs later. (“Congo,” “Soviets” and “Alph-art” being the last)
But I like that, really. Because maybe we come at the same material from different perspectives? Oh, and also… &*@!#$@!
Daggit, there’s an awesome tribute pic to this splash page, with Hergé and Jacobs replacing the Thompson Twins, and of course now I can’t bloody well find it in my BD files…
