Setup — Solar-Azolla-Duck System

Site prep: Dig shallow trenches (6–12" deep) in parallel rows under planned panel rows. Line with clay or pond liner. Grade slightly so water flows trench-to-trench toward a settling basin at the low end.

Solar canopy: Mount panels on A-frame/overhead racking above the trenches, ~40% coverage for shade without killing plant growth elsewhere. Add gutters/channels on panel edges feeding rainwater into trench inlets.

Fill & inoculate: Fill trenches with water. Seed with Azolla (get local stock — pond supply, extension office, or aquaculture supplier). Let it establish full mat coverage before introducing ducks (1–2 weeks).

Fencing: Perimeter fence trenches to keep ducks contained but able to access water edges for grazing.

Stock ducks: Add Khaki Campbells once Azolla mat is established. Start light (don’t overstock before mat can regrow) — increase flock size as mat production stabilizes.

Settling basin: Build a simple sump/basin at the trench outflow — concrete or lined pit, deep enough to let solids settle. Add a drawdown valve or pump port for pulling out compost solids and overflow water.

Optional Gambusia: Add Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) to the settling basin for backup mosquito control. Free from local mosquito control offices in most FL counties.

Water testing kit: Get ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and pH test kits. Test weekly at minimum.
Operation loop:
- Ducks graze Azolla + get 60% commercial feed
- Manure drains into trench water → feeds Azolla growth
- Azolla mat regrows, blocks mosquito larvae, keeps filtering water
- Excess Azolla + drift debris flows to settling basin
- Basin solids → compost; overflow water → fertigate crop beds
- Surplus Azolla (whatever ducks don’t eat) → harvest, dry or sell fresh as feed
Weekly maintenance:
- Check ammonia/DO levels
- Harvest surplus Azolla
- Collect eggs
- Pump/rake settling basin as needed
- Visual check on mat coverage (thin spots = mosquito risk + reduced N-fixation)
Scale-up flag: pilot on a small section (1/4 to 1/2 acre) before committing all 10 acres. Confirms manure-load/Azolla-regrowth balance before you’re managing it across the whole site.
Ducks fly away. Ducks shit any and everywhere. Ducks get sick. Thing hunt and eat ducks…
I’m no expert, but the ducks really dont seem like a good idea.
Many types of farmed ducks are bred to be unable to fly. But yes, their shit is actually biologically helpful. They do get sick and hunted which can be mitigated. Do you have any other animal types you think would be more robust in this system? I was also thinking maybe pigs.
OK, so you have explained what it is, but I am missing where in the climate change solution jigsaw this fits into.
Reducing meat intake means less deforesting, electric cars and renewable energy means less fossil fuel consumption. Making a duck farm does what?
Sequesters carbon dioxide naturally and produces electricity and biomass.
