I think it’s just a thing to say “this is a genuine instance, and not a spam factory”. I think the only control they have is to remove their “guarantor” status.

Oh that’s interesting from that link, it looks like it might just be a Fediseer-specific metric for authenticity

A new account on the Fediseer however is not visible on the whitelist API by default. This is because only accounts which are “Guaranteed” by other instances are visible. The Fediseer starts with an core instance, the fediverse.com, which functions as the root for the Chain of Trust. Either this account, or another account previously guaranteed, will have to guarantee your instance, before it is available for the whitelist.

Not clear if it plays an actual role in federation, depending on if the fediseer whitelist API is widely used

I do like the idea though that if feddit.uk gets compromised, all instances of which it is the sole guarantor for also lose their visibility.

Though this again raises the question of our status w.r.t to Lemmy.world being our sole Guarantor.

I wonder if we could have multiple daddies to be sub to if one of them brings out the nipple clamps 🤔

Not really, instance defederation is still a manual process through Lemmy’s API. It’s useful for sharing info about instances and I have used it to defed from some instances (mostly CSAM). The main thing you need be guaranteed for is so you can be on lemmy-federate.com. Irrc, Piefed also NIH’ed their own ‘trusted instance’ thing.

I don’t think you can have more than one Guarantor, it’s a limit in Fediseer itself.

We are strictly interested in sugar daddies, if you can find someone who can also afford us, we’ll happy put on whatever clamps, ties, or suits they want.

Oh right, it’s not a rule just a guideline of sorts – good to know!

Sad that we can’t fulfill all our trust-holes at once with multiple binding straps. Ah well

Do we (as in feddit.uk) require “sugar daddies”? I’ve not seen one of those “you can fund/contribute” things for a while, and have no idea how the budget is at the moment (or if there’s a link to it somewhere).

Do tell us if we’re skint, and we can all chuck a tenner in :)

No, no, I’m just trying to be funnny. Our finances are complely open and as you can see we are getting more donations than we spend and have about a years worth of funding in reserve. So unless the value of the pound collapses, there’s nothing to worry about there.
