That’s not really the point though. The post isn’t about something new since Star Wars. The idea is something new with a similar scope and scale of Star Wars. They’re not using that as an example of the last thing that was made.

If you think Harry Potter doesn’t have the scale of Star Wars then you’re crazy. As proof of this, Universal built their Harry Potter lands, and Disney tried to compete with their Star Wars land. They’re pretty equal in scale. (Well, unless you mean the scale of their universe, but that’s silly.)

It’s not older than Marvel. Yeah, it’s older than the current thing, but they’ve been making Marvel movies my entire life. Spiderman is Marvel.

It says “in our lifetimes” though. HP is in pretty much all of our lifetimes. There are some people younger, but I don’t think very many.

Did I? The OP is obviously discussing the market share, or culture share. HP obviously is similar to SW. If they meant the number of other pieces of media then sure, SW is bigger, but not for the same point in time. HP is much larger for how old it is.

If I’m still misunderstanding, would you care to explain, rather than just saying it’s misunderstanding it?

I don’t think you’re right. The OP is about something new within our lifetimes. HP is for most of us. The person contradicting originally said the issue was that it wasn’t new. Relative to what? It’s within our lifetimes, like the post says.

Ok, so next they talk about scope and scale. This is the part that could be misunderstood. Yeah, they aren’t as big as SW yet, but SW had decades. Both of these are probably similarly large to SW for the same length of time after release. If anything, HP is larger, in market share, culture share, main entries, theme parks, and just about everything else. If they meant something else then yeah, I misunderstood and, and I can’t see anything else it could have meant to contradict that they don’t fit what the OP was discussing.

What people are trying to explain to you here is this. You read the original post wrong. You read it as nothing new has been made since Star Wars. So you came up with examples of new things since Star Wars. Which was never the argument.

The original post was saying that in the future, meaning after the date it was posted which was like a month ago, something completely new of a huge cultural significance and a massive scale will be created that has nothing to do with anything right now. It’s a post about human Innovation and creativity and about how new things are always on the horizon.

The point of the comment was that this is the most boring statement ever though. It happens all the time. “Tomorrow, the sun is probably going to rise!” That’s not insightful. The point of the comment was that you don’t need to wait for “the next big thing.” Yeah, IPs rule everything, but new big things are still constantly being made.

Edit: Also, the OP says “in our lifetimes.” That doesn’t mean after that post. It means since “we” were born. Most people on this platform are at least as old as HP.

I’m not saying it’s an insightful or original post I’m just saying you interpreted it wrong.

Also Star Wars and Marvel has been in my lifetime too. So that’s an irrelevant point. By new they clearly meant something not already existing. Originality was clearly the entire point. They could have used Harry Potter as their example. It would not have changed their point. You’re focusing too much on the example which wasn’t the point.

Another very popular franchise of questionable quality is The Big Bang Theory, which now has three spinoff series. Good quality? Debatable. Very popular, profitable, and likely to continue expanding? Yes.

Well I absolutely do not think Harry Potter has the same scale as Star Wars. It’s not nearly as well thought out or as extensive or is interconnected. It was written by a brain dead Turf who had had to retcon every single book because she couldn’t keep her thoughts straight after when she wrote the next one.

However that was absolutely not the point I was making.

I don’t think you’re aware of how poorly written most of Star Wars is then.

Yes, the writer for HP sucks, and the books are poorly written, but that’s not really relevant to this discussion. Just watch the sequels of Star Wars especially for how poorly written it is. None of this affects the original premise of the post. There are other things written significantly better that aren’t as popular, but the OP wasn’t talking about those.

If you want to argue that only the original series of SW matters, that has a tiny scale. It hardly explains anything and it just exists in a universe that isn’t explained. The OP isn’t talking about just the original trilogy.

Obviously there’s more SW content though, but it’s had a few decades head start. The point is the HP is a similar scale for the same time period (if anything, it’s significantly larger).

hot take: a new Star Wars or Marvel will emerge in our lifetimes. something completely original and not based on 50+ year old intellectual property…

The original post said a new “Star Wars” not and then not an IP from over 50 years ago. Not that the IP just came out this year or however you want to define “new”.

The very first Harry Potter book came out came out in 1997, which was almost 30 years ago. A Game Of Thrones came out in 1996, exactly 30 years ago. Both blew up and were massive cultural touchstones, not unlike how Star Wars is/was.

I’m not sure how you’re missing this. Get off of Star Wars. That was just an example. Nothing about that post says there’s been nothing new since Star Wars. Star Wars and Marvel were used as examples of huge culturally significant interconnected universes. Massive intellectual properties. That’s the point of the post. They’re saying there’s going to be a new one of that scale sometime in the future. In no way are they saying nothing new has been created since Star Wars. If you read it that way you read it incorrectly.

No shit Star Wars was an example of an IP that was a cultural touchstone. That’s the whole point of the post. That a massive IP would come out, but would have been original and created in the last 50 years (sorry Lord of the Rings).

And you can’t tell me that Harry Potter nor Game of Thrones haven’t reached a cultural significance. The post said nothing about interconnected universes, you should really get off that, since you seem to have inferred that from who knows where. If you say to a random person “Winter is coming” or “Voldemort” or hell, even “Potter” almost everyone is going to think of either IP. Those are examples of a cultural touchstone from the last 30 years.

You seem to be thinking they said nothing came out since Star Wars. That was absolutely 1,000% not what they’re saying. They could have said Harry potter. They could have said game of thrones. Those are two other examples that would have made their point for them. They just chose star wars. I don’t know how to say this any clearer. I don’t understand what you’re not getting.

Ok, let’s start over, since you don’t seem to be getting it. Stop getting hung up on Star Wars. No shit they chose Star Wars.

OP said an example of Massive IP, and put forth that there’ll be a new, original one that will have been created within the last 50 years. With me so far?

Someone said they didn’t know why I was being down voted. You said

              Because those aren’t new?

The examples I gave fit the criteria of the statement: other examples of original IPs that were created after 1976 to become massive IPs. These IPs were just other examples of newer IPs. Still with me? The OP stated some criteria and there are already examples that fit that criteria. There will continue to be other examples that fit that criteria as time goes on, ad nausem.

So off the bat, your original comment on this thread and on other other threads seem off base. There will always be a new, original IP that blows up. That’s a nothing burger. Naturally, culture will find something new to obsess about, something that resonates with people. Should my comment have just been to read the post and say, “Yes, how thought provoking! There could be someone who is starting to come up with ideas right now that will become a massive IP later. How deep!”? If that’s your correct interpretation that I’m not “getting”, no shit. That’s nothing to discuss because it’s so obvious.

Talking about other examples is a way to create conversation on this thread. People can debate if Pokemon, or Jurassic Park, or even the Simpsons fit the criteria. What other examples of IPs have come out after 1976 fit? Maybe these IPs don’t at the moment, but they might blow up in the near future, not unlike how Snoopy has really blown up more recently.

Maybe Snoopy will be the next big thing, could you imagine? Some cultural touchstone that has come back after it’s heyday. That’s not unlike Marvel, where they were big for a while, faced bankruptcy, and then became huge in the last 10 years. That’s more interesting, and worth discussing than to just post “Oh my god, how true.” That’s something that you don’t seem to get.

Of course it’s a nothing burger! It’s utterly vapid. It’s a Twitter post. Someone took a Twitter post, probably made by a 19-year-old who did think this was profound because they’re 19, then they slapped an engagement bait title on it and posted it to Lemmy. It’s the definition of vapid.

That’s what this whole thing was about. You thought they were saying nothing new of that scale had been made since Star Wars, since you still are with that 1976 thing. They weren’t. They were saying something that required no brain activity.

To put it very simply. The post said something new will be made tomorrow. You said that’s wrong because something new was made yesterday. I said that’s why someone downvoted you. This is what we’ve spent brain power on. Cuz we’re both apparently as stupid as the person who made the original post. I’m done.

They literally say there will be an IP that will have come out since 1976 (“and not based on 50+ year old intellectual property”). That is any IP that has or will come out since then. Such as the 90s, not exclusively one that hasn’t been thought of yet. Goddamn. And to think some people might want to discuss what might fit that criteria. But others chime in, arguing that they have issues with reading comprehension. “Ackchyually, they haven’t been thought of yet”. Cool dude.

At this point you’re just a troll.
