“What radicalized you”
Solid first episode. This girl is absolutely nuts, which is appropriate for a Gundam UC/UC-adjacent main character.
@Unboxious @wjs018 I like how she jumps right into things, she reminds me of Kamille
She’s great, love the energy she brings
I would have liked this a lot better had it not been Alt. UC, but that was a phenomenal first episode. The animation on the mobile suits alone looked like it cost the same amount as the first episodes of some of the other shows this season.
I went to the theater for that little theatrical release so I knew what I was getting into already. I really like the colors and the animation for this series. I only just got into Gundam earlier this year, I just finished Zeta and 08th and plan on starting ZZ soon, so I’m still fairly new to Gundam. It’s exciting to get into something when new stuff is coming out.
What I’m most impressed with right now is the quality of the Dub. Everything else I’ve watched so far has been subbed, 08th was the only with an English dub option and it was atrocious, reminded me why I never got into anime before.
Full disclaimer, I am going into this almost entirely ignorant of the greater Gundam lore. The only other Gundam series I have ever seen is Gundam Wing, years ago. So, there was some stuff I had to look up during this episode in an effort to be “in the know” so to speak. Here are some of the things I looked up, so if my understanding is wrong, feel free to correct me you True Gundam Fans out there:
- Sides - the name given to large space colonies that are numbered. This series seems like it will center around Side 6.
- Newtype - basically humans that have reached a higher level of adaptation to space. I tried not to get too spoilery in my research, but from what I read, they seem to have some minor psionic powers, like a sixth sense at detecting other Newtypes. Also, they have incredible reaction speed and spatial awareness due to their acclimatization with microgravity.
- Minovsky Particles - These are emitted by the power source inside Gundam units and serve to interfere with electronics and electromagnetic waves.
Overall though, as somebody unversed in the lore, I was able to follow along well enough. The MC was certainly assertive, taking the literal leap into a stolen Gundam suit without even thinking twice. She also had zero qualms just straight up killing the police officers that were attacking her newfound friend.
I am looking forward to see where things go from here.
You’re pretty spot on. Sides are typically groups of space colonies clustered around the Lagrangian points in Earth’s orbit. Newtype powers have varied over the years. It ranges from minor telepathy (framed as the ability to sense the intent of others, which is allegedly responsible for their unnerving reaction times) to, uh…
…well, they can get pretty out there. No spoilers, but it’s not clear yet where GQuX is going to fall on the scale of “I can feel your anger” to “I can reshape reality to my will”.
Lorewise, GQuX benefits from effectively being an alternate universe to the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, so you don’t need to follow the half-dozen sequel series (and as many again side stories) which exist in the same continuity.
The MC was certainly assertive, taking the literal leap into a stolen Gundam suit without even thinking twice.
That’s basically all Gundam MCs.
She also had zero qualms just straight up killing the police officers that were attacking her newfound friend.
That’s like a significant number of Gundam MCs.
Personally, I love these Gundam tropes. They helped make it iconic.
Is there a place for American audiences to watch this? I didn’t realize it was already airing.
It’s on Amazon Prime here.
Sweet. I had no idea. Thanks!
It’s on multiple streaming services in Japan (though Amazon gets dibs for a day or so). I was hoping this would be the case in the US as well, but I guess not.
What is Kira Kira?
Kira-kira is sort of the Japanese equivalent of saying “sparkle sparkle” or “twinkle twinkle” or something. Kira is also the main character’s name in Gundam SEED.
Thanks for letting me know!
Done!
