i think itd be useful for something simple and single use, like you can hang it on a wall near your door to see when the next bus or train is arriving. itd use barely any energy

for reading a book though, idk why he wouldnt just get something like the bigme highbreak. sure its more expensive but its a smartphone too

The main point of the device is to be tiny so you can just have it in your pocket. Hopefully, encouraging you to read more by lowering the barrier to start.

Though I am sure this device is not meant for everyone.

I’d say a vast majority of the people that have to wear glasses for reading would absolutely hate this.

You know I saw that device before and was interested. I think one reason people might like this better is due to the hackability but it sounds like the xteink is fairly hackable too (and probably has better long term support).

Personally I am still trying to go back to physical books before I try another e-reader.

No idea. You may want to put it directly in your browser window tab. Maybe lemmy is doing something strange to the url? Its def a real link though.

Give it a shot. The code is a bit piecemeal so feel free to improve upon it. I got a book working with upload and stopped there. Its a “good enough” solution. It goes to the next page and keeps the page when the power is out.

The code could probably need a tuneup. I haven’t done C++ in 10+ years other than some tiny linux kernel patches and that was a bit ago.

I thought the point of an e Ink reader was to be pleasant to read on? Why the small screen, why the cramped text, why the hard to read font?

Am I misunderstanding, or is this not open source? Looks like you have to pay on ko-fi.

Free software is about freedom, not price. It’s perfectly acceptable to sell it. It being a paid download doesn’t necessarily mean it’s proprietary. He’s not required to actually post the source online for all to access, he can send it only to paying customers. As long as the customer receives it under a free software license it is free software.

However, without mention of a free software license, I am inclined to believe it is proprietary - although it is described as open source on the page, he might mean to say source available.

I’m going to be honest, I selfishly want to bait one of you to fall in love with the concept and make an open source version.

      I believe in you all.

How to smuggle all three volumes of Das Kapital into prison with just thirty dollars, a condom, and some lube.
