Don’t build the Torment Nexus
Title of my favorite book about building a torment nexus!
I mean… could we please not turn to dystopias for ideas?
We could also refrain from turning to fantasy and sci-fi to look for serious answers on how to develop technology or structure society. They are stories designed to tell a tale that sells copies, not necessarily as accurate or rigorous predictions of things to come.
A dystopia doesn’t have to be science fiction. There are plenty of warnings and social commentary in stories that don’t have to actually come true as told in the text to be relevant enough to pay attention and apply it to reality. Are you suggesting that none of any past scifi has ever had anything important to the real world in either technology, application of it, or social dangers?
That’s the idea. Most of this type of media is meant to serve as a warning, not a roadmap. Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t glorification of fighting a dystopia, a warning that if we allow this dystopia to happen, we have no option but to fight from a worse position.
You kind of misunderstood why dystopias developed in the first place.
Are you saying that life imitates art? What about our collective human nature under capitalism? Wouldn’t that in itself bring out the worst in us? Here we are though. I guess how we got here is up for debate. I’m sure it’s all melding shades of grey.
It’s all beige. The whole universe.
But yes, it’s a collection of things, and art pulls from different parts of it, or on this topic, from different aspects of the directions we’re heading. Our future (present?) isn’t Brave New World or 1984 or Solyent Green, it’s a mix of all of those messages. Because we didn’t listen, or didn’t take it seriously enough. Maybe because it’s “just” scifi and that never happens. Until it does.

We’ve literally matrixed a fly already, and it’s wild to me that thats not the biggest news story / ethical discussion of the day.
Like, we took a fly, sliced it’s brain into million of slices, scanned each slice and rebuilt its exact neuron configuration in software, then, ran that software inside a video game engine wiring up the nervous system to the video game character’s inputs and outputs, and the fly started crawling around in the video game and drinking sugar water…
Thats fucking crazy, in virtually all senses of the word.
Now this is crazy. I was not aware we did this. I guess the next step would be to do a more advanced animal and go from there.
or the space station in enterprise, that abducted aliens and use thier brains the same way.

No, there was a different thing. It was a repair station, and it kidnapped people as the price for the repair, by making it look like they died in an accident. Then their brains ran the thing.

I wish them the best of luck. Self-hosting your own neurons is getting to be incredibly taxing.
