I would take “tens of thousands” with reserve. It would put casualty rate up there with Ukraine and Gaza war. And all this with small firearms vs 1000kg bombs in war.
Its hard to get anything resembling the truth because gov wants a clean image and protests were happening just before Israel/USA attack which had direct goal of toppling gov with these numbers as justification.
Estimates of 30,000-36,000 are based on testimony of medical workers, eyewitnesses who photographed piled bodies, and best estimates of international aid workers.
You are doing the work of the IRGC. They blacked out the internet for the entire country precisely to obscure what they were doing. Their goal was/is to control the narrative and ensure uncertainty. All this was months ahead of any major attacks by outside powers.
Your instinct that it would be/is an unthinkable atrocity is correct. Your instinct that it’s impossible flies in the face of history.
The Khmer Rouge killed nearly 1.4 million in Cambodia in less than 2 years, primarily with guns (which doesn’t include perhaps a million more due to starvation, etc.)
1.5 - 2 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust by bullets in Eastern Europe (not including 4 - 4.5 million more killed in death camps, etc.). Many of these were single incidents over days in which tens of thousands were killed, such as Babi Yar and Kamianets-Podilsky.
Over 500,000 Tutsis were killed in Rwanda, primarily by guns over about 100 days.
Iran is a country of 90 million people. Evidence from multiple sources affirms the estimates of 30,000-36,000+ killed in January protests.
But you are comparing with events where they went door to door killing people. But its true that its a large population. Still 30000 deaths is huge. What would then injured be 300000? Its not one shot kill, unless you do summary executions. Is there any comparison to some other crackdown on protesters?
I remain sceptical because there exists (or rather it existed before war) very big interest for numbers to be impressionable.

Any sources then?
